I need a mono amp which one?

Hey all. I'm looking for a mono class D amp. I have a pair of old school JL audio 8W6 new in box. When one sub is used the amp will see a 3 ohm load and when both are used the amp would see a 1.5 ohm. I want an amp that is 1 ohm stable with about 400-500 watts. First I want to install one and maybe later insall the other one. I'm after SQ. I am looking at the Kicker dx 500.1 or for a good used JL audio 500.1. If anyone with one of these or a similar amp for sale let me know. My budget is about $300. Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

You can get the JL500/1 Slash on eBay for $400 shipped, brand new. They also show up on here periodically for the price range you are looking for. Check the sell section.

Go with 500w. It can always be turned down. You can't turn up a small amp and still be safe and sound good. It's better to have more power and have your speakers under control than having low power and turning up the volume and causing other problems like clipping.

Thanks that's probably what I'll go with. I looked at a couple on the classified section but I can't PM anyone because I'm still too new to this cca forum.

Thanks but I prefer an amp that is 1 ohm stable because the impedance of the subs I have.

For a pair of W6's, wouldn't you need double the power you're looking for, in which case 750.1 would be close to what need?

That impedance is a starting point and that's all......any decent quality 2ohm stable mono amp will be fine with those subs.....

If you can feed them 4-600W RMS total you should be very happy....hell even FS is selling the Alpine MRP-M500 for $199 plus taxes....it would work like a charm.

Don't tease yourself.....get a proper box for the 2 of them, feed them the right amount of juice and see what you think......

In the quest for SQ having too much is easy to compensate for.....not enough, not so much....

when I use two of them together the amp would see 1.5 ohm load and if the amp is only rated 2 ohm stable in mono it probably wouldnt last me long. The subs are dual 6ohm subs I would wire them in parallel . The subs are rated 200 watts rms so I'd like an amp that's around 400 to 500 watts at 1 ohm. I'm pretty sure that's correct if I'm wrong about anything please feel free to corect me it wouldn't be the first time lol

Thanks Bigredguy for that advice. That's prbably what I'll do. I'm just kinda getting back into caraudio. This time I'm taking a different approach like better quality install and SQ not hard core like some guys but budget oriented and carfull selection of components.I believe less is more. I used to think I needed 30 bands of EQ per channel to get good sound.

Thumbs up

The ratings on the coils are a nominal value and a starting point.

As soon as you put the drivers in an enclosure and feed them a signal the value for the system will change, generally moving higher with frequency.

The amp mentioned, as well as any other decent quality amp rated the same will be fine on those drivers.
