JL Audio 12W3v3 vs Alpine SWR-12D4
Comparing the JL Audio 12 W3v3-2 and the Alpine Type R 12" and I have a few questions.
First, which has the best SQ?
Second, which sounds better in a sealed box, which sounds better in a ported?
And lastly, can I go wrong by buying either, or are they both good subs?

What color is better, blue or red?
Is the number 4 better than the letter G?
The two woofers sound different but both can do a great job. If you cannot directly audition the two then all you can do is buy the one you like the looks or price of better.

The JL Audio is a little bit cleaner in sound, but doesn't have as much *** behind it. The Alpine is cheaper, handles more power, and sounds just about as clean when put in the same box. What you have to do to get the most out of either of them is put them in the right box. The JL W3 doesn't really sound good unless it's in a ported box, in which case it is very limited as to what you will get to play (frequency wise). The Alpine in a sealed box is very strong and very versatile. It would be well suited to just about any kind of music and also save you about $50.

All depends on your goals and how much power you are running.
The jlW3 would be more SQ oriented and will sound cleaner but will start to fall on its face after 500watts.
The Type-R will will sound more loose on transient bass lines but will flex more panels due to the motor force.
They both do well in sealed and ported.
