hey guys,

im looking to purchase a new SQ deck, and id like to do some reading on it before i purchase, and stuff like that

just wondering, what you's would recomend...i currently have an alpine, its great but its old.

looking for something that does mp3's. maybe a iPod hook up of some sort? Great sq, at least 4v pre-outs.....

Now i wouldn't mind an Alpine as i love mine, however the shop here dont stock alpine no more, and i rather not buy from the competitors (stereo plus) here in town.

So my choice is mostly with Eclipse, lol....HOWEVER, if other decks are braught up, even alpine, i can ask the store here to order me one no problem....

so again just wonering what other SQ guys are running mostly i guess

thanks!

SQ guys are generally not worried about the need to play MP3's in their decks.

That's why they use such beautiful decks as the Clarion 9255
Pioneer P1, P9
Denon/RF 8250

Call me..... an SQL'er I guess.

Daily driveability, and sounding good at it, was my main goal, and SPL was my second. I thinks I'm doing pretty good...

My Kenwood Excelon KDCX979, on a scale of 1 to 10 overall, is about a 7.5. Using the same scale, the SQ of it is about 8, quality of operation about 4. It sounds really good, has all the toys built in that really do make big SQ differences (DTA, EQ's, Xovers, SRS WOW, 5.1 Dolby Prologic, line input, mp3).

That said, I moved up to it from my old Alpine a couple years ago because my old Alpine was just that - old, low on features, lights in the face didn't work anymore, but it still sounded great, using the 6 disk Alpine changer with it. Recently, my old Alpine made it back to me (it was sitting in a garage) so I wired it up in the van and hooked it up to my Kenwood through the line in, so that I have a 6 disk changer again.

Lo' and behold, the SQ of that changer, playing into the ol Alpine HU (it's gotta be 10 or 12 years old), out of it's preouts, into the inputs of the Kenwood..... the SQ is better than the Kenwood's builtin.

Will I buy a Kenwood again? Possibly, but I'll probably move back to Alpine...

I bought the Pioneer DEH-P860MP for the sole purpose of SQ. I'd rate it about a 8. (too much fan noise when it's turned on)

All of the above mentioned brands are indeed great units..,but changing a HU is like changing a recipe in a meal. It WILL have an effect on SQ tonality etc.., the question would be, features aside, WHICH sounds best with your components, your music, in your ride?
If all you want is to play an iPod, and you love your HU, look into a controller pre-amp, that can have several inputs and control them all with a master volume. (Clarion)
Otherwise, listen to those Hu's and compare with your ears.
As for personal opinion, sonically my choices would be 1-Eclipse,2-Alpine/Clarion,3-Kenwood Excelon.
