new system plans, seek wisdom

Just discovered this forum, so far I like it a lot! I'm planning on getting an 02/03 Maxima this spring, naturally I'm planning a system for it already I currently have a 626 with focal 165KP's up front, with mids in doors and tweets in sail panels. 150wrms x 2. The mid bass is pretty good, but I hate the imaging when the tweets are so far from the mids, plus the mids (especially driver's side) are way too off-axis. I've been thinking about going kick panels, with a nice 5 1/4 component set either from focal or possibly canton, with elemental designs 6.5 inch mid-subs in the doors (they're IB capable). I've just never had a chance to listen to a kick panel setup and am curious how low the soundstage would be with them, not to mention how the speakers hold up being down by errant feet all the time. Has anybody lived with kicks in a daily driver in winter? Or is this a terrible idea? The more I get into SQ the more I realize it is truly an incureable disease...

Another option would be to go active with some nice eq's and time alignment to deal with your imaging issues.

I like kickpanels. Often I choose a 3way kit with a 4" though for the KP so they aren't so large.

Right now I am running a 6 in my doors, 4s in the KPs, and tweeters low in the Apillars and it works well too.

I've started putting more and more research into going active, and from what I've read on diyaudio kick panels are not for me. Max's have factory tweets in the a-pillars, so if I can time align them independantly from my mids in the doors it might put me one step closer to true happiness. Plus having everything hidden in factory spots makes me feel better. I still think I want different components in the front, my Focal KP's cross the tweeter over fairly high (3.8khz) while Morel MT23 tweets are crossed over around 1.9khz, that would be alot more mid at dash level instead of door level plus the TN52 tweets just get too sibilant and harsh when I push them (even at -6db with a bit of eq). I want a tweeter that's still detailed but a bit smoother and more laid back. I'm waiting for more reviews on the CDT HD-M6 mid/woofer, looks like it would satisfy my mid-bass craving but does it sacrifice mid-range accuracy? With an active setup is mixing mids and tweets from different companies a bad idea? I'd have 150wrms for each mid and 70wrms for each tweet.

I haven't even bought the damn car yet and already I'm putting way too much thought into this...

It's never a bad idea to mix tweeters and mids from different companies, unless you're using a complex passive crossover that is tailored to specific drivers and their response.

Running active gives you the perfect oportunity to run whatever drives you want.
