Newer Head Unit Sound quality from alpine and/or pioneer
Hiya,
I have a pioneer 8600 that i was trying to sell because i wanted to go to stock... long story sshort i put my stock head unit back in and it was garbage... now i am contemplating whether to sell my head unit or not.
I can buy a newer headunit that has better sound quality than my pioneer 8600 mp or just keep it.
I am very surprised by the good sound quality from this head unit.
thanx

i have a lowest model alpine.... bought it cause people said alpine desk are amazing.....
and its crap compared to my old full din pioneer.
imo the 8600mp is a fine deck . no need to spend money on a new one unless you are looking for a different style.

8600 had good pre-out voltage if memory serves, the newer alpine's that are entry to mid will have 2v out's, so in that sense your better off where you are.
the 8600 will have a better EQ section than anything entry will now, so again better off - get a RTA and a guy that knows how to tune a car properly, make sure the rest of your install (speakers mounted properly, doors sealed up etc etc) and spend a couple hours tuning your car - pay the $80-$100 to get it done at a store if that is where the best guy is..
Spend your money now on better gear in other weak area's of your system, then when that is great swap up to a better HU.
There is lots of other stuff to talk about here, but that is a start

now this worries me if you guys reckon the 8600 was pretty good with SQ... its hard for me to check out SQ with alpine and compare as 8600 was an older model...

Your changing what you want the deck to do know, so I wouldn't worry about SQ of the 1 vs the other any more..
Good idea on the changer - that way you can keep your best SQ discs in it, and have 30,000 songs available any time on the POD
Have not heard the new Alpine i unit, but it looks cool..
What are the specs etc on it for Pre-outs, DA's etc?

Too bad they handicaped this unit, but given it's target market - it may not be a big deal to most..
2V pre's - not great, but enought to get your amps to clipping so....
2 band eq -
24 bit da's - nice
So it's a good head.. maybe look at putting in a EQS or DQS from audiocontrol or something like that at some point in time if you do this unit.n That will give you lots of drive into your amps, ton's of EQ control etc etc
Ultimately for you it's about how much iPod control you want and how bad you want it vs SQ...
See if a dealer will let you try one quickly in your ride, adjust the gains quickly and do some listening.. Your ears will tell you what you need to know and make the decision for you... Maybe it's 100% for you, maybe not
It's unfortunate, but as 12V lovers we will probably have to get used to this for the foreseeable future as consumers keep puting price pressure on manufactures but demand more technology.. SQ will play a distant 3rd or 4th place.. Funny to see so many 2V heads from Alpine as when I was in retail I remember them being one of the first to push 4V so hard...
Times change I guess... sniff sniff
