old school zr amp or new zx700.5
#2
In terms of SQ the old ZR's are still heralded as one of the best.
Overbuilt, made in USA inefficent beasts... true old school.
The new KX/ZX series kicker went offshore for production and was a complete new design... the ZX boards in 90% of the models are identical to the KX line as well... infact the boards even have "KX" still written on it... they just used a new case for 2006 and called it a new model.
The KX's are by no means bad amps though, infact it's the amp I suggest almost the most for big, clean reliable power. There are some great deals on refurbed, used models... make sure you get some sort of a warranty though.
Also the 550.3 and 700.5 are one of the best of the line... they really push an entire system as hard as 90% of listeners would ever need... you'll get a true 500wRMS+ on your sub(s) and 100wRMS x 4 @ 4ohms... they're quite underrated, your birthsheet will be in the 10xxWRMS i'm sure.
If pure SQ is the goal though... opt for old school ZR... run a fat wire and make sure your electrical system is in shape though... you'll be pulling twice the current as a 700.5 at the same power level with the ZR's

I think I'll try the zx700.5 for now because it much more compact and easy to change. my 100amp fuse and my 4awg will do just fine. I will not sell my zr120 and zr240 though. If I change my mind all i'll have to buy is another zr240 or zr360. thanks alot.
By the way I'll be running 2 sets of MBQuart and (2)10inch comp vr.

I f!@#IN LOVE MY ZR1000. It is puttin out like 1300+ watts rms and pushin my 10's hella hard draws allot of power tho (fried my stock alt in like 6months). MY ZX350.4 is ok but it seems to run a little hot.

I have experience with both
I had the old zr240 and it was wicked for it's ratings. Highly underrated, it birthsheeted 2x68 and 1x360 instead of the 2x40 and 1x240.
I also have two kx800.2's (like mentioned above, pretty much the same as the zx) just sitting in my closet right now, both also underrated. They're putting out 996wrmsx1 and 1004rmsx1 when rated at 800x1. So powerwise you'll be good either way because both lines are highly underrated.
SQ wise I'm running a mtx1501d right now in my car with a MD Napalm15 and it doesn't sound half as good as when I ran it on my kx800.2. Kicker amp's just have awesome sq compared to a lot of the regular class d amps out now.
So pretty much long story short, both ways you'll be good for power and sq. The only advantages I'd go with is with the single amp there's less screwing around with wiring it up. You won't have to get a distribution block and you can just run straight from the battery. BUT......the old zr's are 1 ohm stable. Not sure about the zx but I know my 800.2's aren't so the zr's could give you more flexibility with wiring options. It's up to you.
