really...how close should the tweeter be to the mid?
This is something that I've always wanted to know, and it is forcing me to buy a set of coaxial components.
Right now I have an infinity reference set in my Cavalier (I will never buy those ***** speakers again) And the tweeter is mounted up way higher than the mid. It was the only place I had to mount the tweeter and it sounds too bright.
Whats your take on this guys?

Theoretically, the ideal distance is half the wavelength of the crossover frequency or less but this is pretty much impossible except for coaxial or point source drivers.
In my experience, I like to have the tweeter in the same car as the mid, past there it's all experimentation.

As for tweeter location, I agree Dukk, and in my experience, as long as the tweeter is within 6 inches of the center of the woofer's voice coil, I find I get best results in most cars.
when in doubt, mount the tweeter using velcro/double sided tape, to find best SQ location.

It was suggested to me that I can install the tweeter in the sail of my 06 corolla, it's a nice clean place to put it. But it seems to be about a foot or so away from the midrange.
Does the tweeter really need anything behind it to make it sound better? Because if I mounted it in the sail...it is just a piece of plastic.

My mids are in the kickpanel and the tweets at the bottom corner of the A-pillar. They have to be 30" apart easily. I don't notice any drastic height shifting or frequency separation so HOW you install them is as important as where.
Unless very exotic, your tweeters will have a sealed back so they don't care what is behind them. What can be important is what is around them. All speakers, and I would say especially tweeters, should be mounted flat into a panel rather than plunked on top or sticking above the panel. For your sail panels, if you can flush mount them into the panel, for sure do it.

curious - this thinking is opposite in home applications, unless of course you are dealing with horns. why is this the case in a car?
