Just tossing the sub in a random ported enclosure is not a smart idea. It's basically the equivalent to walking into a bar, closing your eyes, spinning around a few times, walking forward until you run into a girl, and then marrying her hoping you didn't pick the crack that you saw in the corner.
Check the size of you sealed enclosure you've got in in now and see how it compares to the manufacturers recommended one. Is there any polyfill in the box?

preferably not a cube, ideal is a box with non parallel sides to prevent standing waves from causing resonance. A wedge works well...add about 1/2 pound of polyfill per cubic foot for added dampening, and make sure the box is well built usung 3/4" mdf or similar wood and well braced inside...again to avoid resonance that would colour the sound. Not familiar with your head unit's crossover, but it should be more versatile (adjustable) than the amp's..so i'd use that one. If it has settings at 100 hz and lower, i'd start by setting it at 100hz low pass or close to that...set the slope as high as available (may have 6,12,18,24db/oct), and then adjust from there until you like what you hear.
