Scan Speak
#1
Will the 18W/4531G00 woofer work in a car. It's one of Scan Speaks better mid/woofers. It will be used in a two way arrangement with the crossover piont probably ending up around 3Khz to 4Kz (just a guess for now). My main concern is the off axis response. The location will be in the Kicks of the car, and they will not be on-axis (probably close to 60 degrees, but no more then that). Obviously, I will do lots of exparementing with the location of the mid, but since they are quite pricey I dont want to get them if they wont work well in my car.
Any opinions???

i used to have scan speak 8545 in my car, they sound good even in off axis.
at that time im also planning to get 18w/4531g00, but the problem is you must have sealed kick with big volume, so it might be a little difficult to install it in a car.
that why im using seas lotus referance right now.

I have the 8545s with revelator tweeters, they work great. Best sound I've herad in my car, not that I've heard many high end car systems. But I know good sound, and it is good.
Yes, even they need a large enclosure. I built fairly large fiberglass kickpods. They get in the way. (F350 crewcab)
I intend on going to the smaller 4-5" Scan Speak revelators in kickpods, and put the 7" in doors, or some kind of front mid bass box.
You need a crossover system, I use the internal varible crossover in my PG zx450. It is fine.
Apparaently they are hydroscopic, but I have not noticed any problems with absorbtion of water.
You'll find several people use them at elitecaraudio.com.

BTW, I crossover at about 2-2.5K, forget the exact point. Those 7" revelators look they they play higher without breakup, but I would think they (or any 7" speaker) should play no higher than about 2.5-3k.
What tweeter are you thinking of using.

Just as a general rule, you should play a speaker about 1 octave inside of it's measured on-axis bandwidth. For example, if your 7" revelators can play from 40hz to 5khz on-axis in the car, start tuning with 80hz and 2.5Khz X.O. points. Again, this is just a starting point. As I've found some drivers that don't correspond to this rule at all.
Nice choice,

My tweeter of choice is the SEAS 27TDC (that off the top of my head, but that sound right). As far as the cabinet goes, each driver will be getting a pretty large cabinet. I'm cutting out the kicks in my car to allow me to push the driver farther away from me and to give the speaker access to more air space. I hope they arent too affected by moisture, it is still a car after all.
