You dont need an RTA for SQ. It's just a tool that can help. But it can hurt you as well. Just make sure all of your equipment is secured properly and your wiring is safe. Rookie class (which is were you should compete) is very straight forward.
Good luck with the build.

1. Decide if you go active or passive for the front stage
2. Source, find one with time alignment and some decent EQ and XOver features.
NOTE: For active 3way+sub you'll need a DSP like the PXA-H701. I suggest you start active 2way+sub, for this you can use the Eclipse CD7200mkII, most Alpine HU with imprint kit...
3. Amp, look for low THD, high s/n ratio, high separation, high damping.
4. Speakers, get some good speakers(morel,hertz,focal,hybrid...) and use lots of deadener to seal your doors when you install them.
5. Install, download the IASCA rule and it well tell you what to do, but security is VERY important.
6. If you want to go in the amateur class start a log book and take picture of anything that the judge cant see as a proof.
7. Have fun and enjoy listening to music
I am sur i forget ton of stuff... Let us know what you have in mind.
