To get mid 140s you would have to do one of the two (or both):
1) get lots of power and most high power amps are far from sq
2) go with ported which will never sound as tight and as good as sealed if both are done properly. (a bad sealed can sound worse than a ported, yes)

Not to mention, you play ANY sub (even pure SQ sub) at that much power, see how it sounds after a few months with the sub worn out.

You can have the rest of your system sound good but trying to get SPL and SQ out of a sub will just half *** both and I truly believe that the person would lose at both SQ and at SPL if they're competing against somebody who's even semi-competent and concentrating in just one area.

One example that comes to my mind is I sat in a car with a W7, ported but claimed to be a SQ system. Speakers sounded good but then one part of a song that came on that was supposed to be foot tapping and it sounded like nasty, distorted thunder coming from the trunk. Ported boxes also carry more distortion with them due to the characteristics of the box which makes the sub noticeable from the trunk and pulls the imaging back. The entire system works together and unless you got 8s up front and completely disable your subs, your SQL/SPL subs will bring you down.
i'm going to take this moment, to say you are wrong. every type of box has differnet pro's and cons.
in a low volume instance. yes a sealed woofer will sound "tighter" and have less distortion.
however in a high volume instance. a ported woofer produces far less distortion then the sealed, due tot he fact that the sealed airspace actually inhibits the woofer from its movement. with a properly ported enclosure, the woofer can move with less restriction while still sounding "tight"

if you would like me to elaborate further i can

So after all this discussion I still don't know what equipment I need to compete or win in a SQL contest?
does anyone know what other people have one with?

I don't think there are any SQL contests! You can choose SPL or SQ. If you want to do both, that's up to you.

I havent been on this forum for a long time its been about a year since ive posted but every once in a while i come on to see what people are doing but after reading this post I have decided to stop my silence.

There are pleanty of very loud and great sounding cars right now i can think of about 10 that our shop has done alone (including my own). I dont know the history megamx but i do have to ask if he has ever been to a world class event and seen the consumer cars that show up or even the cars in the basic clas, There amaizing. Now i havent gone through the whole 5 page long thread but im guessing that 140 and higher is a good number to satisfy what most would concider loud. we have 3 cars that have gone to the usaci world finals one Pro and 2 consumer, they all placed 3rd or higher and all hit mid 140s all day long and just so you know the consumer cars are all in the range of $5000 to $10000 depending on the custom stuff we decided to build but the gear is reletivly inexpencive. With digital processors that have presets and tons of cotrol you can go from a spl, super loud rip your head off system to a low level sq car in a push of a button. You can turn woofers off change gains from the front seat of your car all with a $600 dollar piece of electronics and i dont think that is more than reasonable for the average consumer in a decent car audio store.

I could go on and on about the different cars that are out there but im hung over and dont feel like typing anymore but megamx you realy need to get out there and take a look at the wicked vehicles that are out there and then post a thread like this

i for one would like to see this statement elaborated on by mega and have him get a little more in depth on this ported box phenomenon hes described.......it should make for a very enlightening read.....

"Ported boxes also carry more distortion with them due to the characteristics of the box which makes the sub noticeable from the trunk and pulls the imaging back"
