I am wondering how my options for sub placement might affect SQ in a 1998 4 door 3 series BMW? I have noticed that some people use the spare tire cavity to build a box. but I don't want to go this route. The two options that seem most evident would be to build tthe box into the area behind the wheel well. The other would be to build a box up against the ski pass through and fire right into the cabin. Would the sound differ dramatically one way or the other? I suppose if the sub is in the back of the car, the acoustics of the trunk come more into play. The trunk is completely lined, and I would also consider adding additional sound dampening material where warranted.

Thanks, Bob.

I don't think I want to trim more metal than the hole for the ski pass through. Body rigidity is a prority, and trimming metal on these cars tends to devalue the trade in. Another possibility to get more bass into the cabin is to purchase an adapter that opens up the factory parcel shelf speakers. A downside I have heard that might arise is that your sunroof might start a rumble when open due to the difference the way air moves around the car. Bob.

If you are looking for SQ, ski pass all the way. The trunk is very sealed and from all the systems I've heard (in E46s, very similar) my preference is ski pass. I did a "vee" enclosure with a pair of 8s (which is for sale) then went to a pair of 10s in the current setup. (Let me know if you want to take a listen - I don't think we are too far away from each other.)
