Cool Too Much Cabin? - Such A Thing?

So I'm considering hatchbacks or wagons (no SUV) because of the cabin space and the ease in producing a loud sound.
However, I'm wondering what you guys think ...

When you're dealing with a wagon, is there almost too much cabin? 4-Doors, huge back ... or is this a dream come true because of all the space?

P.S. I could ask the same question in both SPL and SQ for responses, but I won't. I drive an Alero with 2 12's and over 2000 watts going to them. However, its too much weight, too much electrical and too much power for the car, so I'm thinking I want to reduce it to a single 10 or 12 or maybe 2 10's and have upgraded technology throughout the vehicle. I have 2 Alpine Component sets right now and I want a greater sound, surround sound (I have no speakers in the back right now in the Alero) and probably a 3-Way setup ...

So it may be one setup in one car right now, but I don't think it's going to stay that way forever. So don't hate me because of where I'm at right now Thanks.

Mazda Mazda6 Wagon
Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

I'm just looking for opinions people! Not scientific fact ...

SQ community ... you like hatchbacks and/or wagons?

I should have made this a poll

The less air there's to move the louder it'll be but if you can take up most of the space in cone area in a hatch than it's almost the same ratio of air to subs. More cabin space should equate to a lower frequency because the wave travels further and without obstruction.

I have an 01 4dr Alero, do you have vids of the 12's?

If I rip out the piece of metal blocking a square cabin-trunk cut out I can fit 21 H * 38 W * 30 D, with 1" MDF and a 2" baffle it's a sealed 10.6025 cf3 and around 9 cf3 ported @ 34-35 HZ. The metal is connected by little metal dots and I think I could break it off with a screw-driver but I'm not sure if cutting would be needed.

1000W to an Fi Q/BL 18" might be less weight depending on how much wood you used for the 12's and if the 12's you have now are heavy monsters, what are they? 2 BTL 12's are +/- 160lbs and the shipping weight on a BL 18" is 38lbs so you'd see about 120lbs in weight savings, quite a bit.

For SPL I believe you can get too much cabin, but then I have seen some killer scores out of SUVs without walls also.

For SQ I don't believe you can have too much cabin.

FWIW.....

First time I tried my 4 15s in an E150 (full size panel/work van) I tried putting them behind the seats but facing the rear of the truck......SPL was lame but the low-frequency extension was phenomenal.....you could hear right down to 20-25hz as clear as a bell just not loud enough.

Next box I tried facing them forward again right behind the seats. SPL from 30-50hz went up over 10db, LF extension died off below 30hz or so......

Never did try them facing forward from the rear, I would assume once you found the frequency that worked best with that distance you should get a decent number.....it is tough trying to pressurize that large an airspace, at that point you're just trying to get the 1/4 wave to peak at the meter.....

Like Dukk mentioned it is possible, however I have seen a couple of SUVs that were stupid loud to listen to but as soon as the windows were all closed the standing wave would kill the meter results.....

well... it all really depends on how you build it...

Alan Dante broke 180dB with a single woofer in a Volvo wagon (wall)
Cris Butler broke 180dB with lots of woofers in a van (wall)
Mike Bartels got to high 170s (never caught his biggest #) in a van with a wall
never meet team RipRock ...

-general rule: typical street builds in a big SUV tend to be darn loud outside the vehicle, and darn loud inside (but they meter best outside)
-when you are going for the big# (see the Dante, Bartells, rip rock grooup) putting your power to task with the best transfer function is key...

but this is the SQ forum,
- I have heard many small cabins cars sound big and expansive I have also heard them sound small and cramped
- I have heard big SUV and pickups sound over wide (exaggerated) with weak centers.. and some with some of the VERY best sound I have ever heard in car audio

what do they have in common, the bigger vehicle has room for stuff (amps, processors, and speakers) and it gives them advantages over smaller vehicle because of that. But in real world setups (limited budget and a daily driver) it depends on the vehicle and the talent of the builder
