updated with WinISD charts - amp power for Infinity Kappa Perfect
#1
Hi all,
I'm considering buying a 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 sub, but I only have an amp that has 300 WRMS to drive them with (the sub takes approximately 350 WRMS).
Is there going to be any problems running it with less power, other than the obvious (avoid running the amp into clipping)? Should I build the box a little larger than spec (sealed) to compensate for less power?
All in all, would this be a better choice than running a regular Infinity Reference 1230W with the same 300 WRMS amp (the reference is only rated for the 300)?

You will be OK with 300 especially if the box is ported. I ran one of those subs with 250RMS with no problem (but the sub really shined when I gave it 500watts with my JL 500/1).
IMO, stick with the Perfect as opposed to the reference. The Perfect is a great sounding sub (especially deep bass) and has high sensitivity so you are OK with 300. If you can get into a more powerful amp one day go for it!

Id say LARGE ported box. not sealed
Ive tried large sealed, small sealed
Large ported and small ported.
One Large ported outperforms 2 sealed
in sq department not spl.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice so far. So, I bought the sub, and I'm trying to find out what kind of box to build for it. Here are some WinISD plots, including 2 Infinity designs from the spec sheet (yellow sealed and green ported), and the sealed design that WinISD suggested (red), which is twice the size of the Infinity one (62 litres vs. 28).
From these, the vented design seems the best, but the tabs which are not shown (gain, phase, transition delay) are all really bad for it below 40 Hz. In addition, I would need to get a subsonic filter to keep from damaging the sub at low frequencies. So, I think I might go with a sealed design between 1 ft3 (28 litres) and 1.25 ft3 (35 litres). Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks,

Sometimes that prog really cant show whats gong to happen in your car.
Trial and error.
Id go 2 cubes ported to around 34hz with a
nice port with curved ends.
Sub sonic is not that important, unless your playing 20hz test tones.
