while all the components of a system are important I will say head unit for one reason only and it has nothing t do with the sound.......
you have to look at and interact with that piece every day so you better like the way it looks and be happy with how the controls work or it's gonna drive you nuts

from my experince, i tried a lot of amps and speaker.
when i tried $1000 and up speaker like ( scan speak, dyna audio, venture, accuton, etc) i found that $100 speakers like ( vifa, peerless, max fidelity, etc)didnt have a big differentces. for me when i change amps it have bigger impact in sound than changing speakers.

The car.
The entire install depends on the car.
It determines mounting positions and angles, the amount of room you have to work with... basically the placement of all of the compenents in the system. It also has a huge effect on the sound you hear, depending on the type of surfaces in the interior, the volume of the interior... Whether there is a lot of rattling or not... etc...
(I'd consider the car as part of the system... just as a room plays a huge role in a home system)

Mike, you're one funky chicken. Are you now the king of the grammar police??
I still stand behind what I said. There's no one most important piece that will make or break a system. I don't care what any of you say. Everything must work together. System is only going to be as good as the worse piece of gear or the quality of the install. Thus this thread is actually really stupid Mike......... and thus my stupid response initially.

^^^ no dude, you are really stupid... what is wrong with a discussion of ideas regarding the importance of components in a system? Are you the "topic police"? Who the **** are you to say what can and can not be discussed? I never said that everything did not have to work together... I was trying to get feedback on something you totally missed. I have conceded that install is important -- are you too obtuse to understand that perhaps some components may have more "impact" than others?
