What's The Best Way To Set Time Alignment?

I have been tweeking my Eclipse CD7200mkII and haven't been able to really make the time alignment work. I did the math as the manual suggests by measuring the actual distance to the speakers and calculating it that way. But, it still doesn't sound even.

My thoughts, would be to find a disc that has a ping sound on it. Then I could use that to get the arrival times perfect. But I don't know where to find one, and am open to other suggestions.

Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks.

because its a car, doing it "by the book" only does so much good, it doesn't account for the individual cars resonances, responses and seating position.

As well as level matching as mentioned above and impulse response measuring that you were talking about, forget what makes sense and measurements, find a song with a very solid center and just make adjustments based on your ears.

play with phasing as well.

if you're running front and rear speakers, turn the rears off, do the front time alignment, then turn the rears back on and set them to the already aligned fronts.

everyone likes a different sound. personally, i do not like time alignment for the driver. i much prefer setting it up just for the front. not front left.

not only do i like the sound alot more, i always feel bad for whoever else is in the car, because it just doesn't sound right elsewhere.

give that a try and see what you think.

on my deck i normally use i have 6 preset time alignments, so i set it up both ways, and can switch back and forth at any time. but like i said, personal preference is just aligning it for the front in general.

and as said above, every car has different acoustics, going by the book will only do so much. get a foundation and adjust by ear. tune to your likings, no one elses.

I have never been a huge fan of TA as it is too often a substitute for good design. But I am interested in this topic as I also adjust by ear and I am sure there is a scientific method

Does anybody know of a good test CD that would have a ping and other tuning tools?

audiosound 2000 series.

i think thats the name:S i may be mistaken.

its a 4 disc set for complete fine tuning of your system. each cd is dedicated to tuning certain components. one for amp settings, one for tuning with an RTA, etc.
