head- alpine f1, best processor available at the time
front- hybrid, tweets,mids,6ers, great price for detail
sub- rockford t1 10*2, cheap way to kill roadnoise
amp- precision power pcx, best looking a/b amp great second hand value

i really like the audio challenge. where local stores are given the same equipment and compete to see what turns out.

Bottom line - price.

I got most of my gear as hand-me-downs from friends on another forum. Basically I pieced together my first system in years from people's unwanted bits.

Alpine CDA-9855 (repair job, from a friend in Illinois)
Knu RCAs (friend in Texas)
PG TLD66 linedriver ($40 shipped)
Eclipse EA2000 amps (one per mid, DIYMA giveaway)
Orion HCCA225G5 (tweeter amp, gift from a friend in Louisiana)
PG ZX600.2Ti (sub amp, repair job, picked it up in Belleville for $20, not working)
Seas CD18-MDS 7" mids (another Texan friend)
Seas TFFNC/G 1" textile tweeters (same guy I got the RCAs from)
JBL GTO1014D 10" sub (yet another friend from Texas)

All in all, it's the best-sounding, cheapest (for me!) system I've ever put together. Very nice sounding.

I ordered my components 3 months before the release date
(2 sets of JBL 660gti)
..bought them because I was really impressed with the lower
level GTI's..turned out to be the best components I have owned so far

got the Premier 980 because of the 24 bit burr browns and flexibility

stuck on the SSA Icon woofers because of the rediculous low end extension

my amplification is up in the air right now...the Crown A3000 was the best
sounding sub woofer amp I have ever seen/heard but it's DEAD and JBL can't
find the proper schematics to repair it

so JBL can basically fly a kite...not shure what I'll end up with but I'll be getting
all new amplification

What made me choose my gear were 2 things major things the way it looked love the old school classy look and the reputation it had oh and price I didn’t want to spend over $2000 ok so maybe 3 major things lol

Head unit: McIntosh 406
Electronic crossover: McIntosh MEN456
Parametric equalizer Module: McIntosh MEQ452/ MEQ 451
Equalizer power supply: McIntosh MEP450 (back up units) x2
Eq/crossover controller: McIntosh MEC459
Front channel amp: McIntosh MCC404M
Sub amp: McIntosh MCC301M
Front speakers: Diamond audio D9 components
Sub: still have no sub have not picked one out for this system yet but im aiming towards 12” Idmax V.3

I plan this year to finally have everything installed and hope it will sound some what close to some of your nice systems I have seen on here but I guess that all depends on how good my install is lol

When you have as many kids as I do, it's all about the budget. I try to find the best quality I can, for really Über-cheap.

Head: Pioneer (forget model) - came with my current car. Good enough for now.
Amp1: SoundStream LW830.5 - was very cheap, + it's 5-channels of amplification, so it's flexible.
Amp2: PG Xenon 1200.1 - was very cheap (free) was recovered from the insurance company I work for after a claim was paid. They gave it to me instead of trashing it.
Amp3: Blaupunkt 400w - came with my current car.
Horns: ID CD-1E - picked them up off of a bitter divorcee for 1/10th of their value :ndance:
Mids: CDT ES-06 Got them off of Summer69guy after recommendations on this forum.
Sub: Still up-in-the-air. Have a 12" rockford, but it's not going to fit in the spot I want to put it. Looking at a D-Con 10" from thumpper. Haven't decided on that or an ID sub yet.

I've tried sooooo many systems in my car, I'm starting to think that it's just a !

Pioneer, Eclipse, Kenwood, JVC, Rockford Fosgate, Alpine for head units.
Pioneer, Polk Audio, Realm, Digital Designs, Planet Audio amplifiers.
Pioneer, Polk Audio, Realm, Digital Designs, Hybrid Audio components.
Pioneer, Polk Audio, Realm, Digital Designs, JL subs.

I've tried all of these because I just want the best sounding system that I can compete with and these were available to me on a special deal.

Since trying so many, I know what I like. It's not just the hype that I get from salesmen trying to sell me on a line of products that I'm supposed to resell to my loyal customers.

It lets me sleep really well at night.
