2001 Pathfinder w/ Bose 6 disk in dash
#1
I have lived with the Bose cassette and 6 disk in dash changer for 2 years now.
I have been reluctant to swap it out because of the work involved (new speakers, enclosurers, HU, wiring etc), and the fact that the Pathfinder may not go back together the same way it is now (I had a fantastic Denon install done in Montreal, however another install in Toronto it was a different story... the Camry was put back together so poorly the clutch was catching on a loose piece of plastic).
I am motivated to look at options now since I want to add an Aux connection for satellite radio and an IPod. I don't need to control the IPod from the HU. I'm willing to sacrifice the CD changer and manually swap connections if only one aux is available and can be done inexpensively. I'm just looking for decent sound (I can live with the Bose, however I'm willing to swap out if I can get better sound (which should be easy) and everything goes back together properly. I would also like to put it back to original Bose when I sell the PF in 3 - 5 years.
Some options appear to be:
1) FM or cassette adapter with poor/ok sound quality.
2) add an Aux from Soundgate or Ice-link. I haven't found anyone in Ottawa famaliar with this setup and the cost can almost be as much as an OK HU.
3) Disconnect the 6 disk changer and use the aux for the satellite radio/IPod (not sure what would be involved here).
4) Swap just the HU and use an adapter to convert it for the existing Bose speakers.
5) Swap everything out. Curious to know if the new wiring can be fed through the existing rubber sleeve in the door or needs to be visible.
I'm looking for the best bang for the buck. If I go with 5, would $1,200- 1,500 all in make a big difference in the sound?
Does anyone have any comments about the above options or other suggestions. How many hours would a good installer take for option 5 (done right), and approx. how many to put the Bose back in a couple of years?
If you live in Ottawa, do good work and have experience with the above you can PM me. I have no intention of doing the work myself.
Thanks, Blair
