2003 Toyota Matrix
2003 Toyota Matrix
Hello folks,
Just a quick question before I get down to the nitty gritty.
Im going to replace the deck and front speakers in my gf's Matrix. the deck should be fairly straight forward to change (that silly little faux chrome thing on the dash might be a pain to take off though).
Im curious about the door speakers. I have found out that they are 6 1/2 speakers. There is the door mold and then the speaker cover. My question is can those speaker covers just be popped off and then one could change the speaker from there or does the whole inside door mold have to come off?
Thanks a bunch.

I figured about the doors. I suppose it was just wishful thinking
For the deck, changing the deck itself will be, as you said, dead nuts easy. The one question I have is, do you know if the Matrix (or I guess Toyota in general) use those anti-theft security "keys" to get the stock deck out? I know when I changed the deck on my Mazda Tribute, I needed the keys (which I didnt have). So I went to Future Shop and they just popped it out for me, no charge. Thing is, the key slots where "on/part of" the face plate of the stock deck. I took the dash off the Matrix and there are no holes on the face plate but there are 4 (2 on each side) little "grooves" on the side of the radio. I dont know if those are the same. Any thoughts?

Well, as we all agreed, the deck was dead nuts easy. Took more time to get the old radio out than to get the new one in.
The problem is with the door speakers. I havent seen anything like this before. I took off the door panel. Where the speaker is, its "housed" in a plastic piece that looks like its glued to the metal door insert. On the 4 corners of the plastic housing, there are 4 (one in each corner) .. I dont even know how to explain it ... they look like washers. Round, flat top, with a small little hole in the middle. WTF is that? Every car I have seen has always had screws. What on earth are these things?

They're rivets - you'll find em in some VWs, GM cars, and evidently Toyotas too. Cheap assembly line BS IMO.
My "favourite" is the new 'clip in' speakers on GM cars...At least they'reeasy to get out though.
Anyways, drill em out. Chances are if the speaker looks like it is in a 'spacer', that spacer is actually part of the speaker frame so you may need aftermarket spacers (or make em yourself) to fit new speakers.
