Audio from left side only?

I put in a new Kenwood KDC-MP538U in my 1996 cougar lastnight, and I've only got sound coming out of my left side.

I'm 98% sure that it was all working fine with the factory stereo, but its not with my kenwood.

I used this wiring harness BHA5514 and soldered the wires to their corrisponding colours.... everything is connected to the proper wire.

the only wires i have left over are Mute, from the back of the radio, and dimmer, from the car side.... there were no corrisponding wires to connect these to.
"P. Cont" is connected to the cars "amp power on" wire.

the wires that arnt used (dimmer+/- , mute) are capped off securely so they dont cause any shorts.

they were soldered carefully, and then heat shrunk, so the harness shouldn't be the issue.... i hope.

When i change the Balance on the radio to L the left side gets quieter, but doesn't get silent, and when i change the balance to R, the left side gets louder/resumes normal volume.

The fader seems to be working fine.

Not only that, when I put in a CDRW with mp3s on it, the display shows funny characters, instead of filename or tag info.

Is my radio defective? or did I connect something wrong?

as it turns out, the speaker wiring clip is cracked and a little bit broken.

Ive got a replacement from the auto wreckers, but im not sure how i would install it.

The only problem with the one in my car appears to be the parts that grounds it.... maybe krazy glue will fix it, and i wont have to replace the whole thing, or worse, remove my dashboard to get at the wiring.

krazy glue didnt fix it.... now i have to become a contortionist to get my hand in there and do all the soldering to put the new clip on.

man oh man, its turned into a weekend project to install a freakin stereo, which in all fairness would have been mostly simple if this clip didnt break.

I have always hated it when clips break!! did you wiggle the wire to determine that it is in fact the clip causing the left side not to work?

No, I didnt do that, and as it turns out it wasnt the clip at all, it was the wiring harness i bought...... wasn't plugged in tight enough or the wires were just a little loose inside the actual connection.

I have to put a plug out there for best buy, I took the radio back and the installer not only tested it, he went so far as to take a look at my car, find my factory amp, bypass it with the tiring harness i had, and even fixed the wiring harness to get my audio to work fully.

However, i had to replace the broken clip anyway because it was shorting out somewhere causing my radio to go into protect mode.

It now has a new clip and the audio is working fine after having pulled the wiring out through the dash and putting a new clip on.
I just need to install my USB cable and the aux. port into my dash and this install will be done.

thats tomorrows work.
