Confused about Line Output Converters
Hello everybody. I have an '07 Toyota Tacoma. I'm currently collecting items for an audio upgrade but I'm wondering how I'll connect it all.
Here is what I have:
Front Doors: Hertz ESK 570 Components
Rear Doors: Hertz ECX 165 Coaxials
Sub: Self-Enclosed JL 10"
Amp: Alpine PDX-5 (to be mounted under driver's seat)
I will be keeping my Stock HU for the time being. While I'm well aware that the sound quality isn't as good as an aftermarket HU, I like the stock look and don't want to draw any attention from some of the thugs in my neighborhood. Winnipeg has a horrible reputation for car theft!!
So, my questions are... What Line Output Converters do I require to properly connect my stock HU with my amp? What confuses me is that some folks love their expensive products like JL Cleansweap or AudioControl 6xs while others are adamant that cheaper Walmart LOC's are just as good. I'm leaning towards the cheaper options.. but then how to connect them? Do I really have to splice into the Rear Speaker amp inputs to connect my sub? If so, won't my rear speakers be "underpowered" or will my amp make up for it? Aren't there any LOC's that offer a sub output like the expensive 6XS?
I've been reading a number of posts regarding this and the more I do the more confused I get. I'd really appreciate some help in straightening this stuff out!
Thanks!

There are many routes you can take... (BTW you will be splicing your speaker wires attaching them to the LOC and then the LOC will provide low level RCA inputs to wire directly to your amplifier)
Look for an Audiocontrol HPX (i found a used one $20 though you may not)
It has speaker level inputs, a line driver to up your preout voltage, fader, Subwoofer Volume control and also a 3.5mm input jack for an ipod or such and then has 3 sets of RCA outputs
But as I said before there are many routes you can take... look for the REQ (MTX I think)
don't break the bank though as you may scrap all this gear in trades for an aftermarket head unit

I bought the kicker one and it works great.
Splice right into the rear speaker wires and from there you connect to the low level input of the amp.
Kicker 09ZISL - RCA connectors and adapters - Sonic Electronix

The 6XS is much more than a advanced LOC, it is going to also give you the remote level control on the sub that you need, be a master gain setting device as well as a very good crossover. It is a ideal device for what you are trying to do if you are looking for a good system. I will check on pricing of the 6XS for you if you like.
