If you post your make and model car as well as what head unit you are trying to install, I am sure you will get some more help. Check out this site in the meantime.

1990 Honda Crx, JVC KD-G430
and I bought a wiring adapter, but i think its missing the one that should've been with the factory radio? I bought the car and it had no radio in it, because it was stolen

So the plug on the factory harness has been cut off? If so I recommend taking it to a professional installer.
