Question

HI there.. There is a whizzing sound that matches the engine speed that comes from my amp. There is just cheap RCA cable (it came with the "Absolute" 0/1 kit).

I was wondering if the noise is due to the cheap RCA's.. or what is the problem. Before.. on my first mx6.. it didn't do this.. with the same amp. Its a cheapy alpine deck.

just wondering if these "Ground loop isolator's" that you can get from Radio shack are any good.. or what you'd suggest. The one from Radio shack is just an RCA level one.. not a power cable one.

But what do I do?

Thanks to all for your help

Could try new RCA's. Or one thing I have done to solve that problem before is to ground your RCA better. Also make sure you route the RCA's away from your power wires to keep a clean signal. Last kick at the can would be to buy a isolator, only if nothing else works, but shouldn't come to that.

better rca wires help, they are insolated better, therefore they don't pic up other electrical signals

double check your grounds and even upgrade the factory grounds aswell, and of corse better interconnects help aswell

THere is no such thing as a "cheapy" Alpine deck, all Alpine decks are of good quality. With that said, I would trying first upgrading you power and ground to the deck and also running a better quality RCA cable.

i've seen lots of apline deck that i would consider built of substandard construction
and the wierd thing is so many people think there the best
same goes with there amps
thats where image kick in

Lets assume the alternator noise is coming from the speakers not the amp...

why do you think the amp is the problem?

even inexpensive RCAs usually get the job done without noise. It is possible the RCAs are run too close to a power run but even that usually doesnt cause noise (dont ignore proper technique though)

try cleaning the grounding points(metal to metal contact)

what did you change that started the noise?

Short the inputs of the amp and see if noise is still there , if it is then reground the amp to a better spot. Make sure the spot is sanded and clean.

If the noise goes away then work backwards to the deck . Try rerouting the RCA's away from any possible source of noise . Oh yeah, they should be run on the other side of car away from the power cable. Away from fan motors and factory electrical wires. I ussually try to get the rca's to the floor of the car quick as possible and not run them under the dash if possible.

If the noise is still there then try finding a better ground for the deck. Sometime the factory ground is not good in some cars. I have seen it a few times . Make sure the new ground is sanded, clean and contacts the frame somehow.

If by chance you still have noise try grounding the sheilds (outside, not the pin part ) of the RCA cables to a good known ground. That has worked a few times for me. Ussually if this is the case tho there is a grounding problem internally in the deck, I have been told.

Hmm.. okay.. first off is a new set of RCA's.. then they will be re-routed.. thanks to all for the advise!

Do Ground loop oscillators degrade SQ?
I'm sure they do eh? What would you guys recommend for a good set of RCA's?

First thing to try is run the rca's straight across the car to the amps....if the noise is gone, it's a location thing. Next try a jumper wire from the ground of the rca, to the chassis of the deck.
Make sure the power and ground of the deck are 12 ga or better, and don't use the OEM wires for those.....go straight to the body (not a dash bracket) for ground, and go to the battery (fused of course) for constant power (use 10 ga if you go all the way to the batt).
I haven't had to use a GLI since the 80's, except when adapting a deck to a stock Bose system.
