has anyone ever heard of doing this?
hi,
i am new to this forum, my first post, and i was wondering if anyone knows if this idea i have is a good one or a bad one...
i have a honda civic (sedan) and an all audiobahn system but i dont like the way it sounds because EVERYTHING in the car rattles and because the sub is in the trunk, it sounds muffled. so what i am planing on doing is cutting out the back dash (package deck)and welding reinforcements to maintain structural integraty. once that is done i will cover it up nice with some speaker box fabric and i am hopeing this will bring a lot more sound into the front of the car.
any advice?

You honestly shouldn't have to do anything with the back dash. I would recomend taking care of the rattles and such with some sound deadening first and then see if you like it.
You can cut the back dash, but there is really no point. Do you have speakers in the back dash right now? If not, the holes that are there should be plenty.
How do you have your sub in the trunk? Which way is it facing? Ported or sealed box?
Try to face the sub so it fires towards the back of the trunk. You should be able to increase your output a little.

i plan on making a ported box because if has a flatter freqency response curve and over a wider range.
i do have speakers on the back dash but i plan on moving them somewhere, havnt decided yet
and why wouldnt i just face the sub straight up at the hole i am making? why does everyone say to face it towards the back of the car
thanks for the post

I went one step further with a year old BMW. I cut the rear parcel shelf out and mounted my subs there. That way the drivers fire directly into the passenger compartment. There are some concerns about this though.
You will lose some Dbs, it just isn't as loud.
That part of most cars flexes a bit, be sure to mound the box so it "floats" some how. I learned this the hard way.
The gain is more articulate bass. Although if you're sub isn't articulate to start with, the gain will be for naught.
It is a little scary cutting up a car, but try to have an exit plan...that is a way to reverse what you've done.
Have fun,
Adam

I'm done
For once, I'd like to hear Dukk say Sealed is better.
....but that ain't gonna happen....
For the record, I've EQ'd a car pretty darn flat down to 20hz, and it didn't sound very good. The bump in response at around 50hz IN-CAR from porting is probably how most people EQ their sealed boxes to sound. I'd offer people a crack at the RTA I use to prove it, but I'm kind of in the Candian Boonies...
I may port my 8s yet Dukk.

^ Aw now you don't wanna do THAT Adam - who wants a lower F3, lower excursion, and added output for the minor cost of a little extra room???
Sealed boxes are for those that can't figure out how to vent it
