Is head unit sufficient?
Hi guys!
First off. Great forum I've already been reading a lot of articles on it.
So Here is the question,
My girlfriend drives a 1995 Dodge Neon. The back speakers seem to have gone, by what I can tell. The head unit is a Sony brand 50 watts per channel CD changer. Pretty standard.
I was trying to find aftermarket speakers to mount in the back... trying to stick with the stock 6X9 size to keep it simple. I've managed to stumble across some cheap Pyramid Speakers to do the trick... problem is.. they are rated @ 160 watts RMS.
Is this too much of a huge difference between the head unit and the speakers? What do you guys think?
Thanks!

They will power the speakers, but they will only be maybe a quarter as loud as if you were to go with a amplified signal. You wont get the clairity at high volumes off the head unit without a amplifier.
Especially if its anything like my brothers basic sony cd player. "50 watts per channel" its more like 20 watts rms per channel but it starts to distort when you turn it up like more than half volume :P

Considering the Sony Head unit, I'd recommend a 6x9 that will not be typically bright on the treble. I'd suggest something like a Dragster 6x9 (inexpensive) or better Hertz Audio HCX-690.
Cheap speaker will yield cheaper sound, and promote rare use, and a "not now dear, I have a headache" reply from your GF.
