Install issues with 2006 Cobalt. Need expert opinions.
Okay, so I am slowly peicing together the stereo to go into my 2006 Cobalt LS, but I have been hearing many opinions and thoughts on things when coming to installing.
1) Deck install. Since the factory radio is a microprocessor that controls alot of other systems, it is tricky. I am being told by one store I need to buy the $150 dollar GMCO peice when installing a deck, or do a MTX re-q. Another store tells me nothing is needed. I then go to the dealer who tells me to be careful with installing an aftermarket deck as things can get messed with the internal workings of the car.
2) Door speaker installation. I am installing a set of 6 1/2 componets in the doors, this of course will need custom modification to get them in. I have been reading that Cobalts have issues with rain water and wash water getting in down between the doors which is bad news for speakers.
Any Cobalt owners or installers know of the appropriate answers to these questions and solutions to make sure I don't run into problems? Thanks in advance for any answers

Yes, you are absolutely going to need the GMCO module. DO NOT try to do it without this. I can't see the doors in an 06 Cobalt having anymore water in the doors than my 97 Cavalier. After it rains the first time you open the drivers door there is a nice little waterfall all along the bottom. Just looked at my JL component midbass in the doors and still look new. I wouldn't worry about it, just don't mount the xovers inside the doors.

If the water thing really bothers you there is always buying them speaker covers for the backs of them. I find them to be a little flimsy but after reinforcing them with a little FG they'll ensure dry operation.

you can get that 150ish$ module or the metra 2 turbo kit for over 200 and that keeps all your DIC and other , if you dont care for it then get the module, its very simple to put together the instructions tell you where to put the wires, i have that module in my car currently (2005 pontiac g6) there the exact car basically. hope that helps

Thats all Im trying to figure out, is if it is easy to install yourself. My best bud is great with car audio stuff, so if there is instructions to where to wire should'nt be a problem? Ive just heard horror stories from various people and don't want to screw my car up.

if you really wanted im sure tomorow i can take some pics of mine with my phone if its seeable by just taking out my deck cant remember. but like on the module its like 10 wires at most. you connect the module wires to your harness that plugs into your deck pretty basic i think i did mine in about 30 mins

YOU DO NOT NEED THE MODULE in a base model , so if you own a base model ur good...I OWN A 2006 g5..went through the harnesses at my local shop found the one that lined up....run your own constant 12v and ur set to go. still have my door chimes and when i leave the lights on it still chimes as well. information centre still works too!
