When used correctly, stiffening caps reinforce the power supply. Caps are usually only nessacary for the sub amp -- sometimes people use too much cap for the amps they have. For example, a 1/2 farad cap is all most people actually need.

this may be true... but it is said by a very respectable car audio shop in town. that for every 1000 watts. you need to have 5 farads of capacitence...

Can we expand on this a little? I would like to know more.

Ahh this subject comes up again. Caps good or bad. From my experience there not worth the money S[eakerman is correct you can go out and get a optima for not that much more now a days and that is going to do alot more for you then a cap. Caps put a load on your alternator and burns out your alternator faster. Puts a big drain on your system to.

</font>
I will expand on that " The shop you going to should have there head checked."

The basic rule of thumb is 1000W = 1farad.

Think about it the average price of a 1F cap retail is 199.. that would make you spend 1000 bucks on caps?? Go and find a new shop to deal with

Good thread. As for the original post, why the heck do they have remote leads?

I think Richard Clark (i believe it was him, not 100% sure where exactly I read it), over at carsound, had a pretty good write-up based on pure physics that explained why a conventional cap was no good in car audio. It had a lot to do with what you guys are mentioning here, basically take too long to reload and not worth it for microseconds of output....and it also is not able to ever fully charge correctly...has to do with a voltage issue. Does anyone have a link ot this article?

Does anyone know why some caps have a remote lead on them? What is the point of them?
