Installing new head unit in a 2004 Sunfire
Thank you all for your input and advice. I hate to seem like a nube and all, but it is the first time I've bought a new car and the first time since 1997 that I'm getting a new head unit installed. Things have changed.
What is a "relocation harness"? Is this the wiring set that will allow the installer to hide the factory radio in the trunk? With the radio hidden in the trunk, how does it help with the diagnostics display since one cannot readily see the display? BTW, what kind of information is displayed?
I'd also like more information about the "interface module" that was mentioned by deathtofs.
Finally, the reason I'm looking for an installer to do the job is because I'd like to be able to reinstall the factory radio into the dash, should I ever decide to sell the car. I know that if I did it, I'll end up with a butcher job.
Thanks again,
- DVDRAT

The relocation harness lets you retain everything the factory HU does when turned off.
Although you will have to purchase a small speaker for your chimes (which is available for the kit and plugs right in) for the door/light reminder.
The factory radio can easily be hidden in the trunk behind the carpet on the driver's side.
I would use (and I do) 6.5's in the front and use MDF spacers instead of the Metra plastic pieces as they are pretty thin.

My kit needed the speaker. The wiring was ~$50 and the speaker was $15 I believe. Even if you go without the speaker (and I have yet to install mine after 16months now) the wiring is pretty cheap for peace of mind and warranty.

How about you show me some proof that the relocation is needed for everything to work properly
I have proof that the relocation is not needed, and that proof is my car that works perfectly fine and shows no problems on the diagnostics. And here is a link with lots and lots of information supporting the anti-relocation side.

Again I repeat, the relocation kit is a waste of $...... unless of course door chimes are worth $200+ to you.
And in regards to warranty, GM is legally not allowed to deny warranty unless they can prove that not relocating the deck caused the problems. They would be unable to prove anything, as there are no problems that are caused from not relocating the deck

How do you know what cost is? Even if your $50 figure was correct it would still mean my 9 year old has better math skills than you. We sell the harness for $70. And I don't know why you are singling out FS, I know of no professional shop that doesn't use one of the available harnesses for this car.
Like I said, how much warranty do you give on your advice?
"How about you show me some proof that the relocation is needed for everything to work properly"
You admit yourself that not everything will work properly, how's that for proof.
