Is it possible to blow a deck?
Is it possible to blow a deck?
Hey all,
I think that I might have a blown deck as it is continually blowing fuses. Perhaps you can help me figure it all out.
Here's some background on what is happening:
In a 95 Tercel, I have a cheapo Dual (Wal-Mart brand) CD Deck. Until yesterday it worked fine for the last 8 months. After driving over a particularly bumpy parking lot (potholes and such), the stereo began to cut out and there was a lot of static as if the speakers were losing and regaining connection. I gave the stereo a light tap and it went out.
Along with the stereo, my dome light and warning chime also stopped working. I found the fuse and replaced it only to have it blow again immediately. I then disconnected the stereo and replaced the fuse a second time. This time, the fuse did not blow and the dome light and warning chime still worked.
I then re-connected the stereo (and forgot to disconnect the battery) and the fuse that comes with the stereo blew. I then checked all of the wires for short circuits and everything looked okay. I am reasonably satisfied that there is no short going on with the wiring, though I might go back again to check the ground connection.
Would it be possible that a blown stereo would cause fuses to blow like this? The backlight of the stereo is turning on, but that is all.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Brian

Well I guess that depends on whats shorted and whether or not any internal components are burnt as a result. See if it was me I would pull it apart just to see what happened. If you have a multi meter set it to check ohms (resistance) and touch the red wire with one lead and the chasis with the other and check for current. Also do the same with the yellow wire.
I picked up a cheap multi meter and the voltage and ohm readings looked normal so I took a leap and picked up another deck. I just finished installing it and everything works perfectly. Thanks a lot for all the help.

..... Its sounds like something has come loose and grounded inside the deck....
They're the firefighters who arrive BEFORE the fire from the cheap deck starts.
