Surround Sound set-up

Hello to everyone,

I am new to this forum, and I noticed a lot of people out there that are very knowledgeable to car audio.

I have a 2 part question in setting up surround sound in my 2004 Volvo S60.

At present I have a stock HU with 3 speakers up front, driver and passenger side, speakers in rear door and speakers on rear shelf.

First question is should I go with the Dynaudio speakers which was a upgrade for this model or should I go with JL Audio?

Second question is should I go with a Digital Theatre amp or can a HU with built in surround sound be enough? and if the HU is the way to go, which HU is the best.

I should say the HU should be Navigation/DVD 2 din unit.

More information would be nice. What is your budget? What is your ultimate goal for sound - sq or spl. Do you want to create a full board HT system? Dynaudio is very nice SQ equipment but it is very pricey. JL is less $$$$ but you can usually find better brands for cheaper. Go out and listen to some speakers at your local dealer to get a better idea of what is available and what your preferences are.

It all depends on what your goals are, if you want loud, then you need to re-do the whole system, and you need to know if the stock equipment is compatible with aftermarket components (are your stock speakers 4 ohm, 8 ohm, 2 ohm, etc...?). Depending on your budget, and whether or not you like the sound in the car now, you may want to keep the stock speakers and amp them. Dynaudio is a very high end speaker brand, and even though those are stock, I'll bet they're still pretty decent. I'm an Alpine fan, so I'll give you an example of a surround set up you could go with. The IVA-w205 has a docking station internally for the pmd-b200 navigation unit. It plays just about every disc known to man, and with the Nav unit is about as complete as you may need in a car. If you're going to keep the stock speakers, then I'd probably just use the MRA-f355 theatre amplifier (50 watts x 5 channels) as it's not overly powerful, but more than enough to get excellent sound, and it's controlled by the head unit. Then all you need is a nice powered subwoofer, and you're ready to go. That's just one option, you can substitute which ever brand you like that offers similar features, and you're ready to go. It won't blow anyone away, but it can sound really good.

Well!!! 9G's is more than enough to get a very good system. I would go to well recommended shops and have them give you a few quotes based on what you want. That's enough to get a very good system without a lot of custom work.

The audio shop that I have in mind to do my install recommends the Kenwood DNX7100 HU.

Is anyone familiar with this unit?
