he's asking for trouble the way he's done it. We see people everyday trying to save a few bucks, and that's fine. However you have to put your safety and the saftey of others into consideration. Lets say he gets in an accident and the insurance company doesn't cover him, he went from saving $150 bucks to costing him thousands maybe more.In the end it's just not worth it.

but guys, seriously, why would you spend $150 for a part for a $35000+ truck? I mean, that's just silly...

well looks like on payday ill have to pick one up. The airbags and ABS go through the stock radio? wow i thought it was just your door chimes as stated before. well anyhow i am just glad to see the thing turn on. after spending almost 1000 bucks i was ready to do the baseball bat thing on it when it wouldnt turn on.

All i can say is im glad i stumbled upon this kind of knowledgeable forum with people who genuinely know what they are talking about. i could have kept it this way for alot longer and god forbid if anything happened i would have been screwed. i really appreciate your input and although it would have been great to save a couple bucks, i can see in the long run that i was wrong in doing so, although i didnt know the consequences. thanks again guys!

well i found out some things about the GMCO. first off, I spoke with my dealer and he comfirmed that the only thing i will lose without having one is my chimes. in fact, that is the case for GM models up to year 2007. I looked at one of those modules and all that it is is a speaker... Im sure its good practice to put this in but my dealer told me that it is not necessary if i dont require the chimes. He then said that for the new radios in '08 models there are more dependancies in the radio for other systems but he didnt know if there was even one available as of yet for this year's models. in other words, GMCO is nice, but not necessary according to GM and not voiding any warranty. you can do with my research what you will, but i am convinced that i dont need to blow 200 bucks for a chime.

as you wish man .

i would say go back to your dealer and ask him anything about an aftermarket deck. because they know crap all about anything but whats there. just what im saying .

no one is forcing you to buy the thing just telling you wats up with it.

your stock deck has more then just the chime running through it. it has a DATA RETENTION SYSTEM. if you want to speak to liek an installer of 25 yrs i will give you his number and he can explain it to you.

unfortunatly your dealer is miss informed. If you do not use the gmco you WILL loose more than just door chimes. At the very least you will also lose the RAP(deck stays on till you close the door) You will lose your accesory trigger. I got my hands on one of GM's actual tech manuals and it said the other functions would be lost as well. I did the research my self because I didn't want to charge people $150 if I didn't have to. Most of the dealers don't even know cause it's not something they have to deal with on a daily basis. Also there is a check to see if the air bags are still working. If the air bag light flashes 7 times it's ok. 4 times and something wrong. This is the way it was on the older sunfire's and cavaliers. If you don't get a GMCO I would at least relocate the old radio just to cover your ***. It wouldn't be the first time a dealer was wrong or just plain lied about something!

The unfortunate thing is that IF indeed removing the radio altered the operation of something like the airbags or the ABS system and IF you had an accident and your insurance pointed their finger at your deck install you can BET that the dude at the dealer would 'forget' they ever spoke to you and leave you high and dry.

Too often is not a matter of being right but more having to prove you're not wrong and that can be tough.
