Tweeter Placement

Seeing as this is my first set of components, I'm a bit lost as to where I should mount the tweeters. Do they make a difference in how they are positioned?

I'm currently driving a Caravan, and the obvious possibilities are in the tops of the door panels which would result in the tweeters point straight up. Another option is in the pillars along the windshield which would have the tweeters facing inwards at each other.

The only way they could be mounted to face into the vehicle is on the dash, however, the concern I have there is the fact that the dash is a Foam/Vinyl-type finish.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

Best suggestion is to mount them in all the possible places temporarily for about a week at a time (unless it's just awful)
NO ONE can tell YOU where they will sound best to you, trust your ears, they are too stupid to lie.

First of all, regardless of how you mount it, you wont be able to get a proper stereo imaging even with TA, messing with balance and etc. Just to get that out of your head.

Next, if you point the tweeter upwards, deflecting off the windshield, you'd get about +3 db.

There have been many discussions of where to put it, some people place them close to the woofer/mids so that the highs and mids blends in nicely. Which is why you'd see people installing both the mids and tweeters in the kick panel/door panel. However, it's still going to sound weird because the tweeters are not at ear level, and music would be coming from the bottom. (ideally, you can have a few more tweeters on the dash/A pillar to alleviate this problem)

If you plan to separate them, and if there's a difference in distance horizontally (say the tweeter is 1 ft towards the front vs the mid/woofer placement), it really doesn't matter how you position them. Just mess around and be prepared to EQ down some mids/mid bass. Otherwise, the mids will be "digging/reach" your ears before the highs.

I've been messing with mine for some long time and I've decided that the best placement for my car is angled 45 degree, placed at the left/right most corner of the dash, below the windshield.

When I changed my placement from my kickpods to the far corners of my dash, I gained an extra 10 points on my imaging. Everything changed for me. I angled them directly at my ears and time aligned them with my deck. I just couldn't believe the difference. I have one of the top 5 SQ cars in Western Canada because of it.

how big are they. tweeters tend to be directional or unidirectional or whatever ie the sound goes where they point. bouncing it off the windshield is probably the best bet if they fit in that space. if they're 1'' speakers i would say run it up to where the windshield meets the roof (at the top of your blindspot). thats where i usually run them, and they're small so you can use extra trigger wire for speaker wire so it stays flexible and doesn't alter the way the panels fit. or you can get really creative and remove the centre console lights and mount them there, but then you have no lights. if you take down the headliner and cut a hole you can put them in front of the passengers. did that in a windstar and it looked pretty cool...then again i'm a backyard installer so these guys might have more pro experience

oh, and big up to east york, maybe i'll see you on the road and have a little battle

When we still had our Caravan, I was going to put the tweeters in the bottom part of the A-pillars - where they widen out a couple of inches above the dash. Yes, here they will face eachother and the near one will be way off axis, but the mids in the dash point straight up so all you hear is the near one. The combination of the dash mounted mid and the pillar mounted tweeter will probably sound pretty decent. That was my impression messing around with ours anyway.

Caravans are a tough nut otherwise. KPs aren't easy and the door locations are way low. Aside from what I described above, a total rebuild of the dashtop panel would be necessary for serious sound.
