Question Weird Problem

Hey everyone...new poster here. Hoping I could get some help/advice. I just purchased a used car (a 2003 VW Jetta) and it has a system installed. It appears to have completly stock interior speakers (8 speaker monsoon setup from factory) but has an aftermarket deck and subs in the trunk. The deck is a Kenwood dx512 touchscreen dvd navigation thing. In the trunk there are 2 12" Audiobahn Subs (not sure the model) and a Kaption d1000.1 amp to power them. (1000 watts rms I THINK...Not sure about peak) There is no cap and just a single wire running from the battery to the amp with a fuse.

I was vacuuming the car the other day while listening to some music and I noticed one of the subs wasn't working. I immediatly checked and found it to be unhooked. The design of the box is with screw type connectors so I believe it is likely that the previous owner unhooked it rather then it becoming loose on its own over time.

Anyways, I hooked this sub back up and the system sounds even more amazing then before (I hate to say this but there may actually be a little to much bass for so small a car.) The problem I am having is that every once in a while the deck will just reset on its own and once booted, it will resume playing my CD from the same spot it stopped at. Anyone who has used one of these kenwoods knows that when you turn it on it takes 30 seconds or so to "boot" before it will play sound. WHen it does this it will do it every minute or two until I get pissed off and just shut the thing off. Turning it on and off makes no difference, although if I shut the car off, it will sometimes be fine for 20 mintues before this resumes. Funny thing is that I can sometimes influence this problem. If i turn on my lights (for night driving) the deck will usually begin it reset pattern.

I know, obviously, that I could just unhook one sub and be done with this problem but I really want a real solution. (I'm a little OCD...lol)

Could this be a voltage related problem? If so, would a cap for the amp fix this? (I really want to avoid a second battery/beefier alternator if possible). What size cap would work for this system. My buddy says 1 farad per 1000 watts peak, but i only know my amps RMS, not peak. Can anyone reccomend a brand/ place in toronto/vaughan area where I could get this cap for a decent price (not more then $150-200, if possible).

If this is not my problem, does anyone have any other ideas? Would really be grateful for a solution.

Thanks, Chris

Is the deck actually turning off and then back on or just re booting? It sounds more like a power or ground issue on the deck. Take it out and make sure both are solid connections. You could always run a temp power line from the battery and do the same with a known good ground to see if it fixes the problem.

A cap won't do anything to fix the problem nor would another battery or alternator. 1000w RMS is really not all that much for a stock system to handle. You may notice dimming lights and such but it should not affect you deck.

Once you get the deck working properly do the big three and then see where you are.

i agree with cspurdy sounds more like a problem with the deck...although i had one system that when the sytem pounded really hard it would suck all the power from the car and shut the deck of. but that was do to a dying battery. Start the car and it would run of the alt...just a thought if your battery and alt were going and can't support the draw...does the deck turn on.off when the subs are turned off ? what about at low volume?
