Well if Alberta actually controlled the prices, then hell, why not. But as is, we pay as much or more for gas than most provinces.

And why should Alberta's geographical advantage be amoung the other provinces? Alberta and Ontario are the only 2 provinces to make equalization payments to the rest of the country anyway. So technically, the rest of Canada has been recieving money from Alberta for longer than the people living here.

Yes Chunk, as was said, every man, woman & child in Alberta gets the $400. That makes $1600 for my household alone...

But, IMHO, what a collosal waste of money. Instead of stupid rebate checks, why not build a hospital? Or some schools? Or end healthcare premiums? Or fix our roads? Or... or... or...

It just seems so.. wasteful.

............... But I can't wait to get my new $400 DVD addon into my van....

Well then who does control the prices?

Instead of rebate chqs why don't they just charge less for gas?

Because the cheques are basically the only thing that they can do to benefit all citizens of this fine province equally. If you don't agree with your rebate, the gov't already said you are free to give it back, of donate it to a charitable cause. I wonder how many of those hippies are actualy going to give their cheques back?

According to today's Edmonton sun, you have to be a resident in the 2005 calander year meaning that all the newfies that move up here between now and new years, are also going to get the cheques.

It sounds like they are going to write cheques to everyone who filed income tax last year, and then everyone who has moved here since is going to need to apply for it. Apparently the cheques are gonna be going to the "head of the household" whatever that means...

OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries), which is comprised of eleven countries, is who controls the prices of oil.

Oil is sold by the barrel. Right now it is at record levels. In the last few years oil was kept to about $25 USD a barrel. But with the recent events in the middle east, and the hurricanes, oil prices have been boosted to over $77 a barrel. It is not even the major oil companies who make the money either. Companies like Husky and Petro, are actually locked in at a certain price, around $45 a barrel right now. The rest of the profits go to the gov't, which is why we have a surplus of money in Alberta right now.

As for reducing the price of gas, that would only really help the people who drive gas guzzling units. A person who drives an econobox will hardly see a $400 savings at the pumps, whereas the guy with the money and the $90k hummer will see more than a $400 savings.

If you think $400 CAN$ sounds good for a dividend, try moving to Alaska! Their payment this year was just under $900 US$ & that's the LOWEST since 1988. A few years ago it was almost $2,000 US$!!
