Banking
I finally got mad at my bank for the last time. I'm sick and tired of being charged various service fees for poor service,(if you can call it that)and for the bank to use my money.
I closed an account at the TD-Canada Trust, and when I was asked "why are you closing the account" I replied "it's no longer equitable to do business with this bank", considering the interest they pay compared to the service charges, I'd have owed them money in a matter of a year, if I didn't touch, or add money to the account.
What bank do you deal with? Are you happy with the "service" you get? Have you checked the service fees rate in comparison to the intrest?
Considering this day and age, it's getting harder to save any income for a "nest egg" these days, how do some of you cope?
Have you considered other options to saving money, such as savings bonds, RRSP ?

my mom works at vancity, so ill vouch for that
all my friends that ive told to go there have never come back to me with a complaint.
also, if you are a student, i beleive you get no service charges.
best bet would be to go to a branch and ask them about a account.

I bank @TD
Great service.
as far as service charges vs interest, of course they charge certain fee's, they are a business, as are all banks, and have shareholders to answer too.
that being said. Most people I know bay 12-20/mth for a fixed fee, and the only time they get charged extra is from those theiving ATM machines that are everywhere.

I have accounts at TD and ING direct.
Im also thinking of closing my account at TD. I hate having to pay every month. It is impossible for me to make money there, and I think thats rediculous.
At ING, im getting 2.4% interest, and I pay $0 in fees.

Ive been at Scotia for probably 6years and it aint the best...
They had me setup with an account with zero service fees so long as I had $1G in the account.... that later changed to $2G apparently...
Near the end of the school last year and through the summer I didn't have much in the account and was getting hit HARD for service fees.... last month was $35.50 !!!!!!
I went in and told the SOBs to change my account and now I pay $12 and still only get 50 debit transactions.....
Iam planning on moving to a credit union at some point soon.....

When it comes to cash machines it really makes sense to have an account at Royal Bank. Their machines seem to be the most popular with gas stations and grocery stores.
As for retirement - this past spring I was in the unpleasant situation of being 34 years old, so 25-30 years from practical retirement, and having meager RRSP savings.
A friend of mine clued me into a really neat investment program he is on that will allow me to retire comfortably at 60 and did not add to my monthly debt load. Of course his dad is an investment broker so I was able to get the straight skinny and now I essentially don't have to worry about retirement. sweet
