This can easily be done ... Easily ...

1) Use the OS that came with your Compaq ($0)
2) Use as many components from your Compaq as possible (like the CD-ROM/Burner, Floppy Drive, Hard Disk, graphics card, sound card, etc.)
3) Buy a standard case w/ 300 watt power supply ($35-$50)
4) Buy a decent motherboard with onboard sound/video if you can't use the graphics card/sound card from the Compaq ($75-$110)
5) 256 MB of PC3200 ($50-$70)
6) Bottom-of-the-line AMD Athlon processor ($80-$120)

There's a computer for $245 - $350 ...

 

^^Most Compaq computers come with a system restore disk that can only be used on compaq computers. Also, the restore disk installs tons of crap that you don't need that slows down the computer.

if your going to build one up, you don't need a video card and sound card if a mobo already has it.

 

That would be why most people said to get a mobo WITH onboard sound and video.
