Computer Troubles - possible failing hdd & RAID questions

So, i've been copy'n files to a network drive and recently a large number (20+ gigs disappeared). Hooked the drive up via usb and did some recovery and recovered stuff to another drive. Copy'n things to the drive again, i'm being told a lot of folders and files already exist even though i can't see htem. I'm set to view hidden folders and system folders and everything i can think in there, but i can't see the files/folders that are supposedly there. Likewise if i try and create a folder with the name of something that should be there but isn't, i'm told it already exists and can't be created.

Any suggestions? Note it's running EXT3 file system i believe.

On a related note, it worries me that drive might be die'n so i'm looking at adding a drive to put them in a RAID setup since the NAS allows for that. Question is, do both drives have to be formatted to begin a mirrored raid setup? Could i add the second drive in at any time and just format it and then it'd automatically mirror the original drive?

Likewise, do both drives have to be identical. The drive i've got now is an older sata seagate 200gb. Looking at my normal retailier, they don't even sell a 200gb version of that drive. Will i run into trouble if the drive is a different size or speed then the original? will it work.

All computers in the house would be running XP.

note: there is no OS on the NAS, it is a standalone hdd bay that connects to the router and can be read by any of the networked computers from there.

Ext3 is usually linux

Isn't there any console that lets you see the status of the disks? Maybe one is blown and you need to replace it. You can use a newer drive and that shouldn't be an issue with the array.

Yeah it was a stupid question hehe.

OS is irrelevant pretty much. I havent used a NAS before. But I can tell you your better off using the same type of hard drives.

I say your best bet is to do a backup (something you will need to do regardless of the path you choose) and then configure your array to RAID 1 on the 2 new HD's you end up getting before restoring your data (It seems like yu currently only have one HD?).

As for the corrupt data thing, have you tried to run e2fsck with your filesystem unmounted?

Also are you running Journal,Writeback or Ordered?

Journal, where both metadata and file contents are written to the journal before being committed to the main filesystem. This improves reliability at a performance penalty because all data has to be written twice.

Writeback, where metadata is journaled but file contents are not. This is faster, but introduces the hazard of out-of-order writes where, for example, files being appended to during a crash may gain a tail of garbage on the next mount.

Ordered, is as with writeback, but forces file contents to be written before its associated metadata is marked as committed in the journal. This is thought to be an acceptable compromise between reliability and performance, and hence is the default.

e2fsck is usually for ext2 but you can still try to run it

e2fsck -v -y /dev/sda1 or whatever partition it is
