(GrizZz here on the wife's PC)

Ya, my dog is a 65lb. Purebread show quality Standard Poodle. I never actually showed him though, that requires 6 inch long hair on a Poodle... We let it grow when he was younger and when it was 3 inches he was panting constantly, hot all the time. So I said screw that and he's been sheep-sheared and happy ever since. I've had him since he was 9 weeks old. He IS my son.

He was a working dog, went to work with me every day for the better part of 10 years, since he was about 2 till about 2 years ago, when he started getting "old". So we retired him, he got a good retirement package.

The breeders told me to only expect 10-12 years out of him, and I would have to have him put down for belly cancer at that time. This did not happen, he's over 14 now.

He doesn't have belly cancer, but his teeth are pretty much gone (he chewed on EVERYthing when he was younger, including logs) and some are rotten. The Rheumatism has set into his hips, he has troubles getting up at times. His hearing is almost totally gone and his sight isn't great anymore. The main problem is he gets wicked "tremors", often. Like, every time he's up & walking. These tremors are sometimes really bad, knocking him right over. I could put him on Phenobarbitol to help the tremors, but it's really expensive, and his time is up anyway. I don't think the Phenobarb would improve his life quality that much anyway...

He's been an awesome dog... He cost $500 way back when, current prices are $1000-$1200. Other than the usual puppy shots, he went to the vet twice in his life - once to get a couple growths burned off that were bothering him, and once he caught Beaver Fever from a rain pail at the lake. It almost killed him... But due to him being such a fit dog (he was able to snag frisbee's 8 feet out of the air), he pulled through. Oh and I took him for boosters about four years ago when we were going on holiday to the US, needed the proof for the border...

I thought about getting my uncle to... uh... "Do the deed" in the field, as I could never make myself do it... But no... I think I'll get him put down & cremated, so I can his ashes out at the lake.

I will never do the old farmer method with any of my dogs either, nor will I have someone do it for me.

Maybe you could take the oppourtunity to teach her something about the reality of life. All living things die eventually, but there is a fundamental difference between people and animals. We ARE more valuable than animals. I'm sorry, but a dog does have a price to me, where a person does not (within reason).

Food for thought.....

A dog won't bite the hand that feeds it, yet some children are disrespectful and disobedient to their parents.

The cat was back again on the weekend. No sign of him since though.
Your wife is at the front door with her arms full of groceries, yelling for you to let her in. The dog is at the back door barking for you to let him in. Who do you let in first?

The dog. Atleast he will stop whinning once you let him in.
