Dog Help, need to pick
Short haired german shepards are called German Shepards. They come with short long and medium hair.
Why short hair?
Are you looking for a dog that doesn't shed much....cause I have two dogs, a long haired shepard/husky cross that sheds lots, and a very short haired lab/greyhound cross that sheds tons.
Are you looking for a guard dog?
Will it be around kids?

A Thai Ridgegack and Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Anyone have experience with either of these?

the first runt was my dads (long time ago) dog was crazy strong and very protective of my dad. i assume that was that dogs personatlity
the second we had when i was younger - when i said "runt" - that was the reason we got him, but he truned out to be 150 lbs and very BIG !! he was a clumsy giant
if your in scarborough theres a PET VALUE at morningside and kingston rd that has/had a Rhodesian. If you`d like to see one
my parents are currently thinking about getting an other one
Is there a particular reason you want a guard dog? And why an outdoor dog? Do you know the number of bites yearly in Canada due to "Yard Dogs"? Open any paper at the moment and breed legislation issues are there. Focus is mainly on PBT's but "Power Breeds" are all at risk. People who love and are responsible for "Power Breeds" are in danger of losing them or having to muzzle them in public because of "Yard Dogs" getting loose and upping the bite stats.
All dogs are social creatures and should be active members of the home inside/outside and be provided proper dog social skills, exercise and love. No dog deserves life in a back yard.

im not looking for a 'guard' dog exactly. i need a dog that has some 'killer' instincts. i think Ridgback sounds like what i want. Short hair b/c thats what my gf wants. she had a german sheppard that was a crazy guard dog, now she wants something less 'guard' (but still some) and less hair.
outside b/c thats where the dog will be kept most of the time. obvously in a proper dog house with proper care and attention. so it needs to be able to withstand winters. and pls dont tell me that it is crule to keep dogs outside at all times, im from europe and every dog there is outside their entire life and they are all fine.
im not sure what u guys reffering to by saying yard dog? are u meaning to tell me u keep your german sheppards, rotweillers, etc indoors?? thats crazy lol
this dog would be in the backyard on a chain and fenced off. the german sheppard she had lived like that for 15 years and never attacked anyone unless really provoked or instructed to do so by the owner.
any of u guys know if ridgback can survice a winter in the dog house? im leaning to wards one of those or a rottweiller.
it wont be around kids.
Ms. Tuner thank u for your input. I've been around guard type dogs for the most of my life and have been attacked by german sheppards a few times before, one was VERY bad, I almost lost my left ear, and another time the dog just took a good chunk of my chest. Both dogs were proffesinally trained prison guard dogs and both of them just attacked for no reason. So i can tell u from personal experiance that it doesnt matter if your dog is a 'yard dog' as u reffer it to or a highly trained guard dog, it can still snap any time.

EVERY dog is outside there ENTIRE life?
A DOG IS A SOCIAL ANIMAL IT REQUIRES DAILY ATTENTION AND AFFECTION.
If you do not understand that you do not deserve to raise a dog.
If I seem to be getting a little upset about this it is because I feel very strongly about it. No dog deserves a life alone outside on a chain.
And yes, I keep my two dogs in the house. They are never outside when I am gone (I live beside an elementary school - kids are mean).
Please do yourself a favour and reconsider WHY you want a dog.
I think a Ridgeback would be fine outdoors. They are known to be a rugged animal and where originally used in Lion hunting. They are the only dog that can go extended time without water(couple of days). Hey, at worst you could put heat in the doghouse and could double for when you're sent out there.
