What's you're Maxima weigh? What's a Golf weigh? It's all about power to weight. The Golf 2 platform is still one of the most modified VW platforms around. Due to it's light weight, strength, handling abilities, and every engine apparently fits in it.
Also when you talk about questions when going into a shop. Try adding a few power boosters to your engine and watch the dealer freak.
The Maxima is designed for comfort over performance now. A 300hp Golf 2 is not designed for comfort.

OK, this is for the dope smoking crack heads out there!!
Weight distribution - the best is 60/40 and with the higher weight in the rear - why? hit the brakes and you'll know, it turns into a 50/50 weight to axle ratio which equals safe controlable braking. That is why a 911 Porsche handles like it does, with the greatest amount of weight infront of the rear axle, unlike a Beetle is is tail heavy and shows it!
the Golf/Rabbit A1 > where always front heavy, inside rear tire always lifts off the ground in hard corners, a V8 with 300+ hp equals uncontrolable torque steer issues, so much so that you could hit the curb trying to accelerate out of a corner - who would have thought! Oh yes, that's why Chrysler varied all the FWD axles, lengths, etc, to eliminate torque steer, and they never found the answer...

You do know that the Porsche 911 and the VW Beetle (old one anyways) have the exact same configuration right? They are both Rear engine Rear wheel drive. If the 911 handled so good because of weight distribution alone why do so many drivers end up in a ditch when braking into corners? The new ones are better but that is in the suspension design not weight distribution. I will agree that slight rearward bias will improve stopping but there is much more to handling than just braking.

Oh and the Beetle handled badly due to the rear suspension design of the swingaxle transmission. When the outside would lift (like it does for all cars especially in the 60's) the rear tire would have a bad case of positive camber that was not good for handling Mr. Smarty Pants

Any dealer will freak when you come in with modified vehicles. VW is no exception. Their dealers are know for their **** like attitude towards mods. I used to have an 87 Scirocco. They had a fit about the air filter, and aftermarket rotors and pads I had in there.
I got plenty of Dub Love yo. I had my heart set on a new VW Jetta GLI since they came out. There were a lot of donwnsides about the car though. The lack of horsepower, only black cloth interior, and the high finance rates. All of which made me choose another vehicle. If I'm paying $32k+ for a car I had better be darn sure its the most I can get for my money.
I'm just saying that new vehicles with nice fat HP ratings are starting to appear. VW has not kept up with the trend towards higher HP ratings. The VW VR6 only has 205HP? Thats just not enough compared to offerings from Honda, Accura, and Nissan, and Dodge (SRT-4 comes to mind).

Oh I agree with you, but if you're bringing your Golf 2 with a VR6 Turbo conversion in for service I am hoping it would not be to a dealership. Hopefully it would be going to the tuner who did the convrsion.
Although some dealerships can be cool. When looking at the TDI Jetta I asked the head mechanic and head service guy about the power modules and the both said they are a waste of money, for the same price you can get the upsolute chip. I asked about warranty and they said "what upsolute chip?"

the new passat W8 has some power
granted its a "v8" (kinda)
"4.0L 270 horsepower, 273 lbs-ft torque, 8 cylinder, 72º W, 4V, gas" [from vw.com]
this is only avalable in the passat w8, and i think the plans are to discontinue it.. so i dont know...
