Nanaimo is about $50 more expensive than that per month for an equivalent living quarters (the last time I checked, but that was last year )
My GF and I pay $475 per month for a 1-bedroom apartment which includes hot water and a lounge room (TV, pool table, library, etc.) and hydro is only about $15-$20/month (depending on season) ... It would probably be less sans the receiver and computer Hydro is fairly negligible unless you're operating something that consumes a lot of energy (i.e. Dryer). Laundry is $2/load (so about $16/month for us), though that's actually on the expensive side (most places it's $1.25/load). Insurance is probably a lot cheaper here than in Ontario (from what I've heard). It's usually $1,000-$1,500/year unless you own a fairly-new or expensive vehicle. Insurance on a 2004 Sunfire/Cavalier was just under $2000/year (minus the discount of 10% and it was under $1800/year or about $147/month. Under my discount of 25%, it would've been ~$1450/year or ~$121/month)

Small house IN Duncan goes for about $120+ for anything decent ... In Nanaimo, you're looking at $150+ for anything decent, probably around $200,000 ...

^^They'll fit right in...
Nanaimo is like two different planets...
Easiest way to descibe it would be to take an extreme case of half the town living on the "wrong side of the tracks".
It's a modern paradise Uptown where all the shopping malls are in North Nanaimo/Hammond Bay/Lantzville the ocean views rock and new developments after new developments has been built mostly in the last 10 years.
It's like they gave up on the past (Old Town Nanaimo) and started from scratch and built a whole new town (a new City really, it's huge with Home Depots, Super Malls, Costco ETC ETC)!!

We have been 72.9 here for weeks and today they all jumped to 79.4 That the highest our gas has ever been. We have still never broken the 80 cent mark.
In mid-aug when I made that trip to Wyoming I paid 1.99 at the border, which isn't bad, same price all over Montana. And on the way back, 2 days later the same gas station at SweetGrass jumped to 2.16. I might aswell fill up in Canada at that price.
