Immediate HELP required.

My wife has a 2008 Accent. We bought it new, and purchased an extended warranty. (+3 yrs/60000kms).

She has a check engine light, the code was for a mis-fire in cylinder 1, according to the dealership. My brother-in-law also got the same code...

The car was taken to the dealership. They want to charge my wife for the coil-on-plug coil. The issue is that in our "Protection Plan" warranty - it states that "core plugs and all internal parts" are covered.

So the question I need an answer to, is whether or not the coil-on-plug coil is the same as a "core plug"...

Please. I'm going to go fight with the dealership on this issue right now...

Wiki defines a 'core plug' as the same as a 'freeze plug' Core plug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have had a couple of extended warranties in the past and most consider spark plugs - and related items such as spark plug wires and coils/coil packs - as maintenance items just like brakes and tires, thus no warranty. Many consider sensors as maintenance as well.

Sorry but I think you're SOL. Fortunately, a coil on eBay is only about $25 shipped out of China or under $40 in NA so you shouldn't get hammered toooo bad at a retailer if you decide to buy local.

the coil packs are not maintenance items, they are to last the life of the car. Check any service manual. Regardless, the OP will need to find out if its covered under warranty.

Dealerships will push back from doing any repair, its just the way they do business (warranty coverage or not). Customers have to press the dealer to get work done.

When you go back, go back prepared and site the warranty agreement. If again you get pushed around, try calling the manufacturer.

Yeah, Dukk. As soon as I finished the post, I Googled the core plug... It was not what I was anticipating.
It would have been covered under the standard warranty, up to 100,000kms. Alas, even the extended warranty didn't cover this part. So the bill was $275, for parts/labour and diagnostic.

Thanks for your responses.

That may be but, as TM found, extended warranties often exclude many things - things one would think should be covered.

I had a car with an extended warranty that kept killing electric fuel pumps. The fuel pump was under warranty. On around the fourth one the dealer tracked the source of the problem to a bad oil pressure sensor (yeah, I know, but that's what they told me) and wanted a couple hundred to change the sensor since sensors were not under warranty. I told them to leave it and I would be back in a couple weeks for yet another fuel pump. Funny - they somehow covered the sensor..

Read the document very carefully. Read not only what it says but try to figure out what it does not say..
