Traction/Stability Control, a.k.a, ESP

"Hats off to DC engineers responsible for the traction and stability control on the Charger. They added a feature to the Charger that I had read about, but was skeptical it could be as good as has been writtenabout it in a article in one of the Police Magazines. I was mainly homing in on the performance and the room offered buy the Charger as a patrol vehicle. I have drove the Crown Vics Police Interceptor with their old and new version of the traction control. That was well, interesting at best. But this ESP, is value added. Not just for Police but anybody. It may renew the Snowbelters interest in RWD vehicles.

My Police Department has purchased and recently received a
new civilian model V-6 Charger. It is my Chiefs take home car and is fitted with a minimal amount to Police goodies. I live in Western Lower Michigan about 20 miles inland from Lake Michigan. The cold blast of air we got this past week (11-14) provided our area with about 8 inches of snowfall. That was enough to T&E the Charger in slippery, limit tractions situations.

I mentioned the article I read in the Police Mag. It said that the Charger could out accelerate a Impala FWD in very limited traction conditions. Well I'm read this and I blab it to the other as I wave the Charger banner. I am attempting to sway our Officers to consider the Charger as a option, the HEMI of course. With the support of the other Officers we actual have a chance. Apprehension runs high among our Officers. They are concerned about switching from a FWD Impala to a RWD car. A quick poll of of our guys and gals revealed most people have driven FWD vehicles a majority of their life, the exception to this is the SUV and 4x4 truck owners. They had four wheel drive as a option when the road got snow covered and slippery. Those people know what is like before they flip the switch, or pull the lever into four wheel drive model, its just plain scary.

So the basis for this thread is to say this. I took the car out into the parking lot for our High School Football field. It is smooth, paved, wide open, and oh yeah. snowcovered and slippery. First I step on the throttle and feel the car ease foward, I add more throttle, then more, very little or no wheel spin. Just a gradual acceleration as the light flashes on the dash indication assistance from the ESP (Does that mean electronic stability program)
So hey thats working good lets put it to the floor. The program is not just holding all the power back with the brakes, it feels like it has control of the throttle and the brakes and is using both to modulate power to the rear wheels. So after several very impressive passes I elect to accelerate hard while turning. Again, the same thing, no sliding, no spining, total control. With the throttle right to the floor the engine RPM is about 1500 and not under much load. Next of course I have to go to some ice. There was a section of one of the roads that was shaded and didn't melt off and refroze, it was very shined up and very slippery. I started on the one end of the dread ice patch and accelerated, well of course, hard, this is a test. The car eased forward with out a fishtail or a spin, again total control. Then we came to the end of the ice patch and bare pavement. The tires were not spinning so no squealing tires. The power was applied in a very timely manner as the system calculated the available traction all the way to full power, all very smooth. Now one more test.
I'm heading across the parking lot at 40 MPH and let off the throttle completely. I turn the steering wheel hard left, the back end just starts to think about swinging out when the ESP system applies some right brake (Front and rear I think) to stop the slide and straighten the car out. I really could not be more impressed with this car. My mom is 87 and I wish she could have one. She still is a good driver but this would make her or anybody better.

The state bid on the Charger is nearly out.The preliminary results of the 2006 Michigan State Police Test are on the MSP website if you search "vehicle test" If you are interested. The Charger HEMI is about $2800 more than a Impala and less than that more than the Crown Vic. I expect to see several Departments to switch to the Charger.

Thats my two cents worth
