MSN and Linksys rounter problem
#1
i got rogers and two computers in the house with a linksys router.
i was not able to do audio chat on msn, it just would not connect to the other party's computer.
i called the retards that installed the network to fix it but they ****ed it up even more. Inteas of fixing it the rejects installed yahoo msgner and said to use that instead ??????? ****ing handicaps. they ****ed with the ports and changed my password too.
anyways, now my msn takes 3 years to connect and everytime i request/accept audio or video connection the msn crashes. both computers do this.
router model BEFVP41 and WinXP
CAN ANYONE HELP.

If you don't have the password to the linksys router then just do a reset (usually a button at the back) and do the config yourself.
Setting up rogers is pretty easy because they use DHCP and no password authentication.
Once you get that taken care of you probably just have to go in to the advanced settings and check out the port forwarding.
I'm not familiar with the Linksys routers but I'm sure you can find a bunch of info if you use google.
(yes, I know you're allergic to it, but just get 'er done)

ok guys. we are past port forwarding. i got the password. lets not mention that it's the router blocking ports anymore. i figured that out.
anyone knows as to EXACTLY what to do to fix this? e.i. what ports and triggers to open?

Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router BEFSR41 v.2
In order to operate "MSN Messenger 5.0®" it has to have access to certain "ports" in your "router" and naturally in your "firewall".
The Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router BEFSR41 v.2® is "UPnP (Universal Plug 'n Play)" compatible and will work fine with a program such as "Messenger 5.0®".
The latest "firmware" version available from Linksys® for this router is "version 1.44.2" but version 1.43.2 works fine as well with "UPnP". Just follow their instructions on how to install the firmware.
One word of caution, "Do not" install the "Ports" which are listed on the "Linksys" site for "Messenger" on the "Forwarding" page of your router settings!!! We did and "everything in Messenger 5.0®" worked fine except Audio/Video"!!! The minute we "disabled" these ports we had our first video conference!!!
So, once you have installed the proper firmware for your router, you leave your settings alone and turn your attention to the settings in your "ZoneAlarm Pro 3.5.169® Firewall" to install the proper settings for it!!!
Before we leave this "router" segment, here a couple of "screen captures" of my "Router Settings" as they are now that everything is in working order.
The first image is the "Forwarding" page which you access from the "Setup" page by "clicking" on the "Advanced" tab which then brings you to the second page where you'll find the "Forwarding" tab.
You can see the "ports" which we had entered only to "disable them later"!!!
Also note the "UPnP Forwarding" at the bottom, indicated by the "arrow"!!! If you don't have this "button" displayed, you have the "wrong firmware version"!!!
"Click" on the "UPnP Forwarding" button and it will take you to the "UPnP Forwarding" page which is shown in the next image, below:
The "arrow" indicates the "UPnP ports", both "Internal" and "External", the "values" of which were entered "automatically by the Messenger program" once the needed "ports" had been cleared in your "ZoneAlarm®" firewall.
Also, read the newly submitted material on problems which a user encountered with his Linksys Wireless Router BEFW11S4 version1 attempting to use "MSN Messenger 5.0®" in the below listed "User Problems" segment.

its amazing what you come up with when you type msn and port into your browser then hit the search button
and the really tricky part is to click on the links
