I need some info on MP3 Players.

The reason I am getting one is for skiing, so it needs to be small, skip-free (which rules out hard-drive based mp3 players like the ipod....right?) and have at least an 8hr capacity.

It must have removable storage (for upgradaibility).

So far I have seen:

Sandsik Cruzer Companion
- MP3 attachment that works with sandsick cruzer usb storage devices. 128-1gib availible.

RCA Lyra
- removable sd card
**does not allow you to transfer music off the player onto other computers**

Anything else? Prefer to keep price below $125.

Thanks guys, oh and sound quality and durability is a must (I have been know to crash hard!)

i dont think you will have a problem with the ipod skipping. it seems to be a very solid durable unit. but for under 125, i highly doubt you'll find an ipod.

edit: have you ever thought of a minidisk player? they are pretty sweet, but you'd have to bring a long a couple extra discs with you maybe.

I think Apple also discourages you from using your iPod during running, or other like activities. My hard drive based Creative MP3 player recommends only using it for walking. Which would lead me to believe Apple says something similar.

A review I read (perhaps it was inacuracte or old) stated that the Lyra units convert the file to a deiffernt file format wehn it stores them on the memory. Then when you go to download those songs to another computer you are unable to play them.

If you can in fact dump the songs back onto another computer then taht becomes a morer desirable player.

Could anyone out there with an confirm that there ipod will take abuse and not skip?

I just read a FAQ that says that ipods released after 4/2/03 have 25 minutes of skip protection (less for previous versions). Apparantly it loads 25 min of music into solid-state memory and therfore will not skip....

Damm...wanted to keep this under $225, and the best price for an ipod mini I have seen is $330.

</font>[/QUOTE]The iPod's are delicate period. I had one for a few weeks and while they are very, very nice. I was just always worried about breaking it or scratching it. I'd honestly suggest something else for what you want to use it for.

hmm guess i was wrong then. i would of thought that such an expensive unit would be very good against skipping and such.
