school, parents, my future
hey,
my problem is my family wants me to become a millwright and go to school and get my ticket etc, but like through co.op in highschool ive found that ya its a good job but is it what i really want to be, i duno.
like i do car audio installs on the side but i love doing it, and i look forward to working on my new project and can keep going back, and then the millwright, is just a job, and i dont know if its really what i want.
i wanted to go to mobile dynamics, but the parents didnt like that idea at all, totally canned it.
so how big in the industry, how long is it going to last, i just wants some opinions
thanks, Travis

most of us do what we have to during the day, and what we want to at night, as a millwright you'll always have work and you'll always make fairly decent money. Installers really dont get paid all that well from what i hear, if you manage to get going with your own shop thats different, but as for a job i think youd be better off doing the millwright, get a nice union job, lots of holidays good benefits both things you wouldnt get from the other route, also things like a good pension... You may not care about stuff like that but it wont be long and you will, I'm 27 and dont really care for my job but it pays the bills, it does have a future and i can make a nice living off it eventually once i am ticketed, I go to work so i can do the things i like to do when i have spare time, I dont go to work to have a good time, I really wish i did but thats just not how it worked out for me so far.
The best advice i can give is get something, anything that you can rely on, if you have a ticket then you are always going to be able to find work, if you have a degree you will always be able to find work, dont just spend life bouncing around from one thing to the other just because one doesnt happen to be fun, its really really hard to get anywhere doing that, I'm proof of that. Just because you get your millwright ticket doesnt mean you have to do that forever, but at least you'll know you can do it if need be right? just something to think over thats all...

In highschool I loved cars (girls too!) and thought I was going to be a mechanic. I made my college picks and got in everywhere I wanted but in the end decided I enjoyed working on cars as a hobby and it was not something I wanted to do as a career.
Same can be said for car audio. I worked in a shop for a few years during HS and college but in the end it is just a hobby.
Bottom line: Whatever you pick make sure you want it as a career and not just as a hobby.

Yuli hit that out of the park for a grand slam
Millwright is a good job if you have the time to put in for a ticket.I got mine left and never went back.I have abut 6 different tickets and just bounce from one to another when I want as I am self employed as well.I have owned a Audio video shop as well but unless you become a 2001 audio video type of shop in the end you will find it don`t last. The big reason people are getting out of this type of shop is big chain shops and the high mark-up dealers need to do to make money at all.Rule of thumb is 100% mark-up or you sink fast, as you will already be sinking fast in this business.Between all the fees holding a shop open it don`t give much in the end. When I owned my shop I could not even pay my self min. wage and we where a big big shop with huge yearly sales figures but in the end it was nothing.Do it on the side then you can get $30 per hour and not pay any of it to anyone as its under the table cash in hand.If you become a dealer do it online as there is few fees and in some cases no taxes or anything like that.I own a online store that I make good cash off of and don`t pay any taxes or fees except for server fees and bank fees,Only thing is I can`t bring that money in to Canada as a income or anything like that but the good point of it is my huge bank roll waiting for me to collect.I will some day but I am moving over to Stockholm for a year then I can bring what ever back with me as money in my bank that will no longer be a income but by then a savings. This was a good tip I got from Revenue Canada as this business has nothing to do with Canada like my other stores.
Bottom line Electronics of any kind is too competitive of someone that can not hit the market shares hard,in other words unless you have a few million to start and hit the others hard it is always a struggle.
One note on Revenue Canada,eBay power sellers watch out Revenue Canada will hit hard soon and go back for some time for back taxes(this will be for sellers taxes as well as taxes that are regional i.e.:buyers part of the tax.
Right now Revenue Canada is going after eBay and they will get what they want!! this is a for sure as they have agreements here in Canada with eBay that will be revamped if not I can see another China scenario where you can`t get some sites for reasons the government sees fit.
Sorry in advance I am not editing for spelling LOL
My advice is get all and any tickets you can they are nice(less time involved the better as you can go on to the next one after that).I can get a job anywhere with all mine and I start with vary high wages because of them.Even if I grab work for a bit that don`t use them I get more then going wage because of them.
Oh one other way I know of is work for 10-15 years on a rig or crab boat and retire.I know of a few people like that and they just work and save, gain interest on savings and next thing you know they can live vary high on a horse with just the interest that is paid to them by the bank!!!

there is no money as an installer. In order for audio or spl to be your hobby(and it is an expensive one) you need to making proper money. Any type of B.A. is guaranteed to get you high 40k's if not more. Need I say more? I think not.
