Texas Holdem
blinds are the betting amounts. Like before the flop (3 cards that everyone can use), you can bet $3 or raise $3. After the flop, you can bet/raise $6 at a time. If someone wins twice, they get a kill chip in front of them, and the first round betting is $6 then after the flop is $12

For example, say you were playing at a table where the stakes are $3/6 and you are 2 places left of the dealer. You would be forced to put $3 into the pot before anybody gets dealt any cards, and the person to your right(one place to the left of the dealer) would be forced to put in likely $1 or $2 before the cards are dealt. This is done just so there is always people in the pot and its guarenteed that somebody will money every hand.

You're confusing blinds with the minimum bet or the structured bet.
The blinds are the mandatory bets before the cards are dealt, usually only required of the player to the left of the dealer (the small blind) and the second player to the left of the dealer (the big blind).
EDIT: coulter beat me to it

we had a poker tourney at our house last night, or rather a game of no limit texas holdem.
$20 buyin, use .25 .50 1 and 2 chips. Lasted 7.5 hours, meaning i didn't get to bed till 3:30 and had to get up at 4:30 doh. I came in second out of 8, which got me $20 (my buyin, cept i had to take the 4 rolls of dimes - who's the jackass that uses rolls of dimes?)
None the less, hella fun, had one killer hand, where i went all in, he had a full house of 5's over 8's, but i had the full house of a's over 8's - it was hella intense.
Wouldn't have minded the $140 first place pot, too bad i played dumb near the end, going all in with 50-60 bucks nearly every hand.
