And if the police were using Laser instead of radar . . .

All this discussion about getting out o tickets is crap. You do the crime, you pay the fine. No one wants to take responsibility for their actions.

On June 30th, my father-in-law was biking (pedal bike) when he was hit by a drunk driver in Pick-up truck. Amazingly, he was not killed and did not suffer any brain damage - his helmet saved his life.

The kicker - the drunk (who metered at 2+ times the legal limit of alcohol and was too drunk to walk at the scene of the accident) is able to drive again.

He is pleading NOT guilty.

Were is the justice in that? My father-in-law still cannot drive and on a daily basis struggles to do routine things while the drunk is fighting is trying to get out of his punishment.

It sucks. You do the crime, you pay the fine.

Sorry to hear about your father in law. But not all people that get speeding tickets are actualy speeding. And those that are, the speed they are ticketed for may not be same. There is a great margin of error with radar guns and few people question them.
Think about it this way:
If they ticket on average 20-30 during a regular 2 hour speed trap with an average ticket of $140,thats a huge amount of profit. Then take into account that 90% of people pay without questioning the charge. 1 person fighting a wrongfully issued ticket if done properly has a good chance of getting off as they've already been paid for that days work several times over.

Yeah, if there actually is an error in calculation, definitely fight it. You shouldn't pay for something that you didn't do.

I was simply reacting against those people who speed, know they were speeding, and were caught accurately but still go to court because they don't want to pay.

That was the most Canadian hypothetical situation I have ever seen, nice! Seriously though, raising the speed limit seems like a good idea for major highways, especially with today's more fuel efficient cars. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the 55mph speed limit and to a lesser extent the 100kph limit put in place to control highway fuel consumption? It just never went away.

no, id have to say the perfect canadian hypothetical situation would be a beaver walking out in front of you, forcing you so slide out of control into an eskimo, ice fishing in his igloo.

Haha, Funny!

Just because a vehicle can do 150kph does not mean that it can drive on a road safely at those speeds. There is a good article in the Toronto Star -- Wheels section, about safe driving. They agree that the 100 limit is slow, but it is not that the VEHICLE can't drive at that speed, but it is the DRIVER.

I lost my sister when her car slid off the road, for no apparent reason, and she was going less than 35kph -- in fact traffic that was driving behind her was doing 35 and catching her. Picture Pancakes on a plate, slidding off onto the floor. Thats basically what happened to her brain when she side-impacted a light post. Police estimate the speed at impact was approxmatly 15 - 20kph

Those who have had a blow out at 100, or 110, or infact at any speed know how dangerous it is, and if your car did not spin, then you are a lucky one. Imagine that happening at 130, or more. Its not the fact that you'll crash, but the fact that you will crash into OTHER VEHICLES.

Moose, Beaver, Mike Harris, Mel Lastman, and Squrills can all run out onto the road trying to cross the street, you might hit them, and if your going too fast... Well...

Hell even on a perfect day, little patches of water, or metal spinters from a truck that are laying on the road can cause you to have an accident.

However I do agree that a limit that is 120 or 130, especially after your away from down-town, such as the 401 between Bowmanville and Quebec, Milton - London, should be 120 or more.

Always fight your tickets too, the cops rather be out on the road and nail 10 more people than sitting in court for 2 hours to deal with ONE.
