I got a rear LCD top of the line Hitachi and it's excellent. Great product and made very well.
This year is definately the time to buy as my tv has dropped in price over a $1000.00.

Most people seem to forget that years ago the US had mandataded that every station brodcast at least one show in HD by 1996.

Didn't even come close to happening.

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:
(Taken from http://hometheater.about.com/od/lcdt...f/lcdfaq2.htm)

1. Larger screen size availability.
2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.
3. Better color accuracy and saturation.
4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.
2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.
3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.
4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years) than LCD. This can vary according to other environmental and use factors.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

1. No burn-in of static images.
2. Cooler running temperature.
3. No high altitude use issues.
4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.
5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can vary according other environmental and use factors.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.
2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts).
3. Not as available in large screen sizes above 37-inches
4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.

5. LCD televisions are much more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions.

A few notes...
As for plasma burn in, it isnt really an issue these days... Burn in report (beware, its a PDF)
if you dont feel like reading all of that...they left the menu screen from halo 2 on a plasma for 48 hours...when they took it off, it was burnt in, however, after playing a video loop for 24 hours the burn in was gone.
As for life span, 60,000 hours is a long time, 8 hours a day thats over 20 years.
But if your seriously researching a TV i would give that link a read.
DLP's arent very heavy, 2 people can easily pick one up and walk around with it. Not as light as a plasma though. (50" plasma weighs just over 100lbs)
another thing to consider about DLP's (and LCD rear projection) is the lamp replacement. Depending on the TV, i've heard estimates of anywhere from 5000 - 10000 hours, you need to replace to lamp in there...and they're not cheap, between $500 - $1000...so the initial cost on a DLP may be lower, however over time it can really add up.

Well right now we have a classic 32", but I'm looking to go around 42". I'd prefer it to be flat screen, for wall mounting etc.

Overall, what would you guys buy?
I'm pretty much set on the LCD now.. But who knows.

At that size you'll do better with a plasma both in visual performance & in price (apples vs. apples).
What LCD model are you considering?

I have a 47" widescreen HDTV Rear Projection CRT and it is fantastic! The picture easily equals a DLP or LCD. I just bought it a few months back and couldn't be happier. And it was only 998.00 U.S.

The good thing about Rear Projection CRT's is their picture quality matches the big spendy TV's and they are so much cheaper. The only drawback is their size. But, if you've got a good spot for one I would buy one. I mean it'll last you for the next several years and then by that time the newest of technology will be more affordable. Don't let anyone tell you a Rear Projection CRT is a bad TV. They image quality is still hard to beat.

I work at Target and we have some DLP's there and some LCD's and I have watched hours upoon hours of crap at work and those TV's look no sharper then my CRT. To tell you the truth the LCD actually almost looks worse when displaying anything and the DLP looks about the same as mine. The only advantage of the DLP is it's much slimmer. Buy what you want, but a Rear Projection CRT is unmatched qaulity for the price!

Rear Projection -- Notta chance. I liek to see my TV from other places than just straight in front of it
And LCD and DLP get shadowy from angles as well. Anyone that uses an LCD as a computer monitor should know that if you tilt it up or down or are at any sort of an angle you get shadows.

I can watch my RPTV from almost anywhere minus waaay off to the sides without any shadow effect.

I actually haven't noticed any shadowing on Plasmas. They are generally good from all angles.

Here is a thread that explains the different types of televisions and how they work. With pictures for the youngins!

in response to shadowing or viewing angles

i've got a sony grand wega 55" rear projection LCD it's not exactly wall hangable, it's maybe 14" deep, weights 100lbs

it sits beside the foot of my bed....a tower speaker inbetween the two. I watch my tv nightly with no problems ont he viewing angle.

The only time you can look at the tv and it not look good is if you're standing above and looking down at the picture, then it's obviously darker. But that doesn't effect me cause i prefer to sit down and watch tv.

TV was the best purchase of my life i think (of course it needs the stereo/surround sound to go with it.
