using a tv as a computer monitor

ok I want to set up a multimedia entertainment center in my living room
I got the computer and sound sytem part worked out
but I want to know about tv's
I have tried using my non hdtv sony trinitron (pre wega) as a monitor .......video is okay but you can't read the text
will a normal hdtv work as a monitor (I know I'd need a vga to component adaptor)
or do I need a fancy (read even more expensive) monitor such as a large lcd, plasma or samsung DLP
I really want to do this but can't see spending 4-5 grand on a tv/monitor

I have a 64mb ati 7600 in my laptop and can set the tv out as high as 1024x768 .........it looks ok but the text is still too blurry for my liking
but all regular tv's are 640x480 resolution
I was hoping somebody had tried an hdtv ........ I wanted to know if it offered acceptable text quality
if not I'll have to get a samsung dlp or plasma display

You've never have the same quality -- period, the end. Unless your running a Plasma TV that has the Computer VGA Input onit.
Most the best setups that you can use is S-Video output on the Card if you have one. Text is always crappy to read, but if your playing a Movie, it looks fine. You have to always play with the Res. If your card has a TV Mode, it can set the output size to a proper format, but it will be too small / too large, depending on your TV Size.. EG: On a 24" TV it will look Normal, on 17" Too Small, on a 34" Too large and grainy.
TV Card with Coaxial out is probably your best bet, since it will use seperate software to generate the coxial output. I haven't seen any in local stores but I know they are around somewhere, I have one.. but it was given, no name brand.
